Hey this is my first time posting on here, but have vistied this site alot and really enjoy it, well anyway I have a 372xp saw got threw ebay from a saw shop ran it a couple times cutting firewood ran great, but recently I ordered a new bar and chain for my saw a 20inch bar and chain, The saw came with a 28 inch bar just to big for my use, but after putting new bar and chain on and the the standard tigthening, when you start the saw the chain will not move, you can shut it off and move the chain by hand,I know the chain isn't to tight checked a dozen times. the last time i used the saw with the 28 inch bar it want to hang up alot in other words the chain would hang up, what do i need a new clutch, springs, or rim, don't want to start buying parts and waste money and not fix the saw , please help me guys:confused2:

To me it sounds like something is causing friction between the chain drivers and bar.

Does the gauge of the bar match the gauge of the chain? Is the replacement bar and chain new off the shelf?

To increase your awareness of saw operation and to help us we need some facts. . . . .

What is the gauge of your chains like .050", .056, or .063"?

What is the gauge of you bars?

What numbers are on your rim sprocket at the clutch?

Does the connecting link on the chain look like the rest of the chain? Is it the same pitch as the chain?

Have you had the chain jump off the bar any?

when you remove the clutch cover and place the chain on the rim does it fit correctly. The same as the 28 inch chain does? I think you might have a .325 chain on your 3/8ths saw. My buddy did this on his MS170. It happens dont sweat it......learn from it!

2 things i would check ,first make sure the chain brake band isnt 'tripped ' on inside the side cover that would bind the clutch drum up ,then check the drive sprocket to verify there are still pins to pull the chains drive links around then maybe check the clutch springs and shoes .good luck jk

Easiest way to answer these questions is:

Post the number/letters imprinted on your chain driver tang.

Post make of chain (if known).

Post all numbers written on the heal of the bar.

Post the number(s) on the drive sprocket.

Depending how the drive sprocket was installed, you may have to remove it to see the numbers. It should read 3/8-7

Hi RR34...
Well first off we'll assume that you do have the chain brake off...

First thing I suspect is you may have the wrong pitch bar and chain.
Check to see if pitch numbers are the same on both bars.
Next check to make sure chains are also same pitch as the bar.
This may be your problem...it's binding on the wrong drive sprocket..??
Standard 372 pitch is .375....if you're using .325 ... problem solved
(the rim sprocket pitch...chain pitch...and tip sprocket pitch must all match)

As for the rim sprocket...just look at it...is it badly worn or not..??
The part that is puzzling me the most is why it ran good on the 28"
chain for awhile and not now. Perhaps your bar tip sprocket is clogged up.
Check if it spins freely.. if not...usually an overnight soak in solvent will free up.

Hope this helps ya!

Here is the information i have, purchased a 20in carlton bar from baileys the bar is a 3/8 0.058. the chain is a woodland pro WPL 20 38RC72 3/8 .058. I looked at the rim spocket and it has the numbers 3/8-7. the spocket looks to be in good shape. when i put the new bar and chain on it does nothing , but acts like it's bloged down and if you give it a lot of gas it starts to smoke. for the heck of it i put the 28inch bar back on and it did run but act like it was in a bind and the bar and chain got very hot. I just don't know what to do.

It sure does sound like you have a brake problem...
Like somehow the brake is not releasing properly.

Of course...I can't go further without actually seeing it.
I recommend you take the saw to a good Husky dealer for inspection
Hopefully a different one than where you bought it.
(not saying seller is bad...you did say it ran good for a while after purchase)
I always like several "second opinions"...but I'm old and have learned to do so..!!

Sounds to me like you 20 inch bar has excess paint in the bar groove. In the past I have used folded sand paper in the bar groove to remove thick paint.

I have also left the chain on the loose side, dumped bar oil onto the bar/chain, and throttled the engine.

The last two carlton bars I bought off baileys received a little sanding and the loose chain treatment. They work fine now.

With the 28" bar it sounds as though you are lite on oil. That bar and chain should be plenty broke in with no heat issues.

Check your oiler while you are working on this bar issue.

How would a chain brake heat up the chain?:bang:

Tanks for the advice, i will sand some on the bar and soak it in some oil as well, never had this happen, I love the saw it runs perfect, I on three other saws but they are sthil saws. my first husky

You should be able to spin the sprocket around freely with the bar and chain off.

With the bar and chain off the sprocket spin a smooth as silk, I believe it might be the new carlton bar, going to take some sand paper and sand the grooves good and give a good oil bath, and run the chain loose to break it all in. I have always used sthil bars and oregon bars with no issues but the carlton bars were on sale and it helps to save all you can these days. I really thanks you guys for all this advice, there is no husky shops around here just a sthil dealership, you have to try to fix your things around here.
