I am going to get one of these soon and I have been thinking about the 22 or 35 ton units from TSC (Huskee?). Any others to consider? Just me and a neighbor using it sporadically but some of the trees are pretty big. I have about 40 decent size trees that I need to split right off the bat then just maintenance. I like the 22 ton but if there is a decent upgrade for performance or durability besides the 35 ton I would be interested!

Thanks!

The TSC splitters are nice if I had the money to get a new one when first looking Id probably have one. There right down the road from me so I see them sitting outside all the time.I would always get the bigger unit if possible.Northern tool has a good selection of splitters also.

Huskee 35 ton from TSC, know of 3 of 'em that we bought last year on sale and with 10% off for 1600. it shears through what won't split at 2/3 throttle.

for your budget ... hands down would be a 35 ton Speeco from TSC
got mine on sale and they matched no tax day at a competitor.
ended up paying $1600, no way there's a better splitter in that price range.

there are better splitters, but at much higher $$$...
mine has been dead reliable, handles 4ft+ diameter Oaks with ease.

only complaint is cycle times, which are dog slow at 16 seconds.
12.5 OHV Briggs motor would easily handle a 22gpm pump.
plans are to upgrade pump, but 35 ton works so good as is, hate to disturb it.

I also have the Huskee 35-ton from TSC and I like it. Also check out SpeeCo (parent company of Huskee) splitters at Omni Mfg. They make 25- and 28-ton models with 12s cycle times and in your price range.

Depending the size and type of wood you are splitting, you could look at one of the smaller Iron & Oak splitters. Very good and faster cycling times.

Ive had very good luck with my 30 ton Nothstar splitter. It has a 5HP HondaGX engine, splits verticle and horizontal, and also has a throttle kickdown when you send the piston all the way back.It allows you to gather chunks and whatever while the engine idles.I think it was $1600.00 delivered to my door. Some assembly required.I got it from Northern Tool. It`s going on 4 years with not one problem. The Honda is an awsome engine.

iron & oak make excellent splitters, especially their high end models. but you get MUCH more machine for your $$$ with a 35 ton speeco or Northern 37 ton which are borderline commercial.

Northern tools 37ton splitter delivers the closest bang for $$$ to Speeco 35 ton. but way more folks on Arborsite go with Speeco. MUCH more feedback on Speeco splitters vs Northern Tools. Speeco has excellent customer service!!!

probably due to Tractor Supply having way more locations (100+ stores in 38 states) than Northern Tools. for most to get a Northern Tools splitter ... Add $300-$400 for shipping + another $120 for 9 gallons of hydraulic fluid not included with Northern Tools splitters.

vs high probability of a TSC being within driving distance. NO shipping, pickup Speeco splitter ready to split, all engine and hydraulic fluids installed. translates into about $400 cost advantage for 35 ton models.

if one is patient ... wait for splitters to go on sale at Tractor Supply ... that's the best way to get max bang for your $$$!!

I agree the big Speeco at Tractor Supply is a good looking unit and I have heard lots of good feedback on their durability and customer service. I have a 26 ton Brave I purchased 6 years ago and have had no problems, some farm and home stores handle the Brave line, don't be afraid to consider them if they are available in your area. The Brave is the lower cost line of Iron and Oak. Happy splitting!

The wife and I are not in the wood business, we just heat with wood. We took a 15 year hiatus and heated with oil fired hot water. Anyhoo, we bought a TSC Huskee 22 ton last year and couldn't be happier. It is not really fast and you would want something with a little more ooomph if you were thinking commercial use, 35 ton comes to mind, but it does a great job. It has split some 30" oak. Does great on locust too. Considering we have oil fired hot water heat and the cost of #1 fuel oil, this winter will pay for it and the MS362 we bought. The only trouble I have had is the motor mount bolts vibrated loose and the pump side coupling loosened up and slid down a little. A little wrench work on the motor and resetting the gap on the coupling and it was right back in business. I think the Huskee/Speeco would be a perfect fit for you.

I concur with the 35 ton Huskee. Had mine 2 years w/o a problem that tightening a hose clamp wouldn't fix. If you do get one tighten all the clamps when you get it home. TSC doesn't always get them all tight.

Northern tools is almost finished with a new store in Tulsa. with 70 locations they are not that far behind TSC. feedback on AS for Northern splitters are consistently all good, just not nearly the same number as Speeco.

wonder why more folks on AS run Speeco splitters?
they both are excellent splitters very close in spec's and price.

Troy-Bilt 27 ton with Honda engine!

Troy-Bilt 27 ton with Honda engine. Look at my profile. It split this and as much every year since we've had it. Never had a piece it couldn't split. $1200 at Lowes with discount.

I would not get in the habit of recommending the Troy-Bilt to anyone, namely for these reasons.

Troy-Bilt Safety alert: log splitter - Router Forums

want me to keep going?

too bad Troybilt name no longer means the same thing after MTD purchased it.
word is Gardenway who mfg the original Troybilt Horse Tillers went out of business after getting sued for injuries from a Tomahawk shredder (very dangerous to run).

Yep, made the mistake of buying a Troy-Bilt riding mower a few years ago to cut the grass on our farm. Can truthfully say that I would never make that mistake again.

I have been looking at the TS 22ton and the Northern 22 ton. The Northern is $300 more, but has a honda with horizontal shaft. The TS has a briggs vertical shaft. I believe the Northern has a faster cycle time.

if the Northern is $300 more, then add another $100+ for hydraulic and engine oil. they are sold dry. can you pickup both without shipping charges? that was a deal breaker for me...

real soon folks in Okla will have a Northern store and TSC. otherwise closest Northern store is in Dallas. TSC is 60 miles away in Pryor, OK.

been keeping an eye out for a used TW-5 Timberwolf ... seems everyone that pops up are on the east coast.

For me, it was between the 26-ton Brave/I&O and the 35-ton Huskee, which were in the same price range at the time. Component-wise, it was pretty much a wash. Huskee had the negative of being heavier and tongue-heavy in particular, but the Brave/I&O was very nicely balanced. Brave/I&O had the negatives of having to purchase the log cradle and dislodger separately. After two years with the Huskee 35-ton, I've been very pleased and especially pleased at how the 35-ton beastie powers through nasty crotches. Honestly, I think I would have been satisfied with any of those models.
