I ordered what I thought would be a skip chisel, and what I was sent was square ground chisel. I am sure it will cut very well, but when it dulls, it will be useless to me. There is no-one out here that sharpens chains except by hand. The cost of mailing back and forth and the sharpen will end up costing almost as much as the chain. I think I should have spent the additional time looking around for a roll or 25' at least.

I know Stihl used to make .063 x .404 RSF because I have a 60" loop of the stuff on my long, but way too whippy, GB bar. I bought these to go on my new 50" Cannon.

yes you can, just file it with your round file like you normally do. I know a couple guys who buy square chisel and round file it. It's the same price, and faster until that first sharpening.

Yeah I do it often now. The square is cheaper from most places out west so that's what I do unless I feel like square filing it. I've started using a little bit of semi chisel lately and like it pretty good.

about $40 cheaper per 100ft reel from madsens right now.

Not a problem at all. I have/ had square on more than one saw, I havent had any problems regrinding to round yet.

A couple weeks ago when I called the rolls were $230 for any oregon variety. I need to pick up another roll before it goes up again.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your replies. So now I will find out how much faster this stuff is than round .404. I have been told the square ground is really fast. I can't wait to cut something. I know where a couple root ball are, but it's raining outside right now and the snow is way too goopy to do anything. :(

What little bit of off the roll square i have feels slower than round. Never put the stop watch to it though. I know my round filed is faster than off the roll square.

its a 10-15% faster in clean softer woods. not that much faster in hardwoods, but still faster. again in clean wood.

I've been able to beat off the roll square with hand filed round every time I compared it. I can file square a little faster but not much. I never really could get a good grind to be much faster than round by more than about 5%. It is a smoother chain and I like running it but with out a grinder it's hard to stay consistent with 28-32" full comp and semi skip chains.

Did you file it?.......Because a square tooth isn't sharpened right off the roll!

mdavlee......If you can't get square to cut faster than round you might be what they call in the logging world a "Cull".......Hahahahahahahaha!

all my .50 and .404 starts square the crews chains go round real fast. they don't hand file square,i've tryed to teach but allwell thats what the 510 silvey's for. my personal chains go about halfway before going round . square of the roll on my personal saws always get about 10 knocked off the rackers right away. i like big bites in softwood.

Nope, just off the roll. Just saying....

Wonder...

What would happen if you filed half of them round and left the other half square?

Even better, file one side round and leave the other side square, see if it cuts straight?

I know tis dumb, but it just popped into my head.

And seeing if anyone ever tried just for giggles.. :msp_biggrin:

do you change any angle's over stock ? i've alway's stayed with stock but would like to learn something diff for diff wood or cookie cuttin. i do notice that after my first touch up it gets alittle better.

It takes filing the off the roll stuff to make it cut good.

Dennis I said the square was faster but not by a whole lot. Filed square to off the roll round chain is a lot faster. I don't like new chain round, square, or semi chisel without at least touching the rakers. Oregon seems to be hit and miss with the quality of the grind on it when new. I had some in the roll of full comp that looked real bad with the corner up too high on the top plate. Here's a tooth on a filed chain from last month when I was home.

Don't use it on rootballs! It will cut like a scalded cat on clean wood but dull faster than any chain you have ever used on dirty wood.

These are leftover from trees that have floated down the river during spring breakup and have been trimmed of usable wood by folks around here. Then I come in with the big-inch saws and slice 'em into pieces. :hmm3grin2orange:
