Ms460 or 046 wich is the prefered and why?
I found a ms460 for $830 with 32" bar supposedly made 2 cuts also found a 046 with the srew on caps compression is around 160 psi with 25" bar.
Just looking for some input

That sounds like more than new, and with Ultra you get a two year warranty. What is the price on the 046?

look into a dolmar 7900 or a 6400 with BBK and thank us later. Everyone loves them! lots of power. and pretty light for the cc size and really really good Anitvibe. Dolmar is a big name brand most people haven't heard of. They gotta be pretty damn tough if home depot is using them as rentals!

I have heard of them but i have 2 stihl dealers very close to me. How is the power on them compared to the 460 046

I would do the $400 one if it is in good looking and running order. Any extras with them? Think what you could get with that other $400 you'd save!

How bad do you need a saw? I picked up a Makita 6401 for $125 and a Stihl 066 for $50 both with extras off CL.

That is a 460 in the pic that i borrowed to drop some trees in the yard, i really liked it. I have no experience behind any other pro saw brands to do a comparison

I could use an 066. The 460 is my go to saw for most my cutting. Depending on how soon you need the saw you might be able to scour ebay or craigslist for a deal.400 for that saw is about the going price for a good running decent lookin saw. 046. Vs 460 is the same. No benefits to one over the other. Get an hd filter and you're ready to roll

Something me and andy probably don't take into account often is that saws up north could be in higher demand keeping prices higher. The $50 066 andy got is a fluke... You might find a deal like that MAYBE once every couple years if you are looking hard enough... Andy got lucky with that saw for sure especially since he snuk into my area to get it before I saw it! ;)

The power and reliability of the 7900 is just as good as the 460. I haven't raced them side by side with the same off the roll chain so I don't know which would win. The stihl 046/460 is 75-76cc's. I like the antivibe better on the 7900 as it doesn't wear you out as much after a full day of cutting. The 6400 and the 7900 are the same saw with different size cylinders and the Makita 6401 is the same saw as the Dolmar 6400 (just in makita blue). You can get the 6400 Dolmar or the 6401 Makita sometimes for $100-$200 (64cc). The big bore kit or the OEM 7900 kit is an easy bolt on that makes the saw 79-84cc.

That all being said before you stick to one saw i would look around on here and get some more reviews on other saws. Husky 372's seem to be really popular too. I will say if you buy used I would buy a Husky or Dolmar b/c they are just designed in a way that makes them easier to work on than Stihls. Dealer support near you is nice to have and Stihl makes a good saw but you have to pay the piper for the support if you buy used. I couldn't afford to buy a new 70cc saw when I wanted one so I bought one that needed fixed and taught myself the mechanics. You can learn anything you need about saws on this thread, and teaching yourself will probably give you a better appreciation and understanding of the saw you use. Dealer support is sometimes over rated if you can turn a wrench yourself, plus parts are only a couple days shipping away (with any saw brand) now that you can order parts online. Plus even when I go to my local Premium Stihl dealer they still have to order parts and I have to wait a couple days for them to come in.

Just a couple thoughts to chew on.

Cheers!

I have been looking for some time now, it seems like once someone gets one they turn to gold

There's an unused 460 on consignment, new out of box but never put into wood, at our local Jonsered dealer up here in NE Minnesota. He's asking $600. I've seen the saw. It's perfect but for a couple black smudges. Pretty sure it's got a 20-inch B&C. I'm sure he'd ship, or I could help you out if he won't ship. PM me if you'd like his contact info.

You  :msp_thumbup:

Honestly if you're torn and want a stihl I would buy this one from the classifieds!

$550 for a 064 ported and rebuilt saw!!! DEAL!
More power than the 046/460 and completely rebuilt by Randy (a pro at porting and rebuilding!).
If that 460 put a smile on your face this 064 is sure to widen it from ear to ear!

That's a great price for an unused ms460. Give the man some rep!:msp_thumbup:

I can't because I gotta spread some more around.:(
