I bought a 034 a few weeks ago, fair shape, and I am happy with it so far, but I was wondering if there is any common problems that plauge that model of saw.Seth

Seth,

We have two of them in the family, just bought another one.
My brother grabbed the wrong gas can and sent my Dad's to
galled aluminum hades. We fixed it, he wouldn't give it up.
With a 16" bar it's fantastic.

Stihltech,

The 034 sup I just bought runs great, but smokes like a bear on
start up. It cleans up and is fine, I just have never had a machine smoke that much on warm up. New carb kit?, or should I just not
even worry about it. Everything else sure seems OK. I will be sure to check the pulse hose.

034

I would check out the carb. Freshen it up with a kit.
The only other possibility, a case gasket leaking bar oil into the crank area. Never saw it on a 34, but that doesn't mean it could not happen. Usually on an 056.

I would do a compression test, rings may be slightly worn and then when the engine warms up it takes up the clearance

Thanks for your expertise and I do belive that it the 034 is a great addition to my Stihl family!

The 088 was the last new Stihl I will ever buy,but I would buy a used Stihl if a good deal pops up.I have test sawed with the Solo 694 and the Dolmar PS-7900, PS-9010 and like them.Solo has great support, and you never know Solo is always looking for new dealers

My local dealer offered me a 2001 088 with a 42" bar for the low
low price of eight bills. He wants rid of it. Local guy contracted with our CO-OP, took down five big right of way cottonwoods at
$800.00 a piece, and called her a night. Something about money
not being in the right place at the right time. Same old story.
I told him I could help him sell it through Our site or e-rip.
He didn't bite, so it sits. I have no practical use for it, but that
never stopped me before.
I wish Solo and Domar/Makita had a larger presence in MN.
You'd have better luck trying to sell someone a Studebaker
around here.

Later on.

Eight bones is a great price for 088 ,John Lambert can get cheap Stihls too. I paid $1400 for my 088.
Here in southwest Wisconsin there are 24 large Hardwood sawmills withen a 40 mile raidious that means lots of loggers.I like Stihl saws but the 2 Stihl dealers are hard to deal with .We have all brands sold in town and seeing lots of Solos and Dolmars.Seth
