Man O man this thing is a runner, I dropped both chains off this morning on my way to work, as both had been rocked but never sharpened. The local guy don't really know how to sharpen a chain he is just a monkey. But he did get most of the bad off, I got home and finished with a file, took it out side to run it and check the tune. Hit first pull flip the choke off and away she goes. let it warm up good it was a tad lean on the L side H was good. Put it in some wood and holy poo I was impressed. Thanks for talking me in to getting it lol.

Not to keep asking questions, should I muffler mod or is it good as is. I took the muffler off its a open can, Just make the hole 80% or so and retune.
No- you should send it to Randy and have him port it. Then and only then will it be "as good as it gets." DUH'R

I got to really try the 044 out this morning, I had two helpers loading and cut 3 loads in two hours. From logged tops after we got home my oldest son brought his compression gauge, checked the 044 it blew 172 my ms 291 blew 150. So the 044 must be in really good shape.

mastermind did an 044 for me not to long ago. its worth it. you will be surprised and be glad you did it. top notch work. very strong saw.

Thanks for sharing. I will be sending him my 10 mm 044 soon along with my 362 C-M. At first I was only going to get one saw done but I could not figure out which one, and I did not want either one to become a couch potato.

Put a DP CDN 460 Magnum muffler cover on it. Same exact bolt pattern, takes 10 minutes to replace. Then re-tune the carb richer (after trimming the limiter tabs if it has them). You will make it into a near 046 that way, but lighter, more nimble, and way less vibration than a 046. Even if you get it ported, do the DP muffler cover replacement.

I always try to take Randy 2 or 3 at once too. Makes the trip worthwhile.

I'll say its in great shape - I would wonder if any work was done to it already, except you asked about muffler modding it.
A trip to Tennessee will do it some good, you will be able to work faster and smile more every time you put it into wood. I routinely run a 32" setup with RS on mine, ported it myself and tossed the base gasket in favor of some Loctite "grape jelly". No lathe work done just yet. Here is mine, Some Dudes from Tennessee helped me with the timing numbers .............. I cant compare my porting to any of Randys, but imagine how much better a Masterminded 044 would run

There are 2 parts to a muffler on the 044/440 and 046/460 saws. The inner part that is shaped like a square cup, and the outer that is the (more or less flat) cover. The inner part has two torx bolts that attach it to the exhaust port of the engine. The muffler cover attaches to the inner muffler 'cup' with 4 smaller torx bolts on the outside. So yes, you pull the original cover off and replace it with the new DP Mag cover and keep the muffler base that you have.

Here is a photo I grabbed from Ebay. The DP cover is on the left, and the muffler base is on the right. No need to replace the base.
