Power to weight they would compare to a mac PM610..they're butt ugly too.

Yeah I'm sure some of that chinese alloy has some lead in it too. The bummer-ags are a bit on the heavy side also from memory. Oh and performance is lacking.

We had a breakdown at the sawmill today and wont be going again until Monday waiting on parts...We are all on firewood tomorrow awsome not! lol, it will be stinking hot...I got our fleet of 66's ready this afternoon sharp and ready to go, operators have been told don't cut the dirt! and come to me to fix it.... oh well is nice to dream I will be busy trying to cut and fileing rocked out chains all day ha ha......View attachment 408948 View attachment 408949

Oh thats a lovely sight

Hey Matt

How's that log splitter of yours going? How many ton has it split and does it cycle fast enough for your liking? Do you think it has enough grunt to put a 4 way head on it?

I'm looking at getting one and I can get that brand now for under 1400 bucks.

Or do you suggest something else that's better for under 2G's?

Thanks

Hi mate.
Still going well. Had a low oil sensor crap itself so disconnected that and away she went again. Broke a starter cord last night so have to fix that. I reckon it's all of the 40 tonne rating and way more grunt than any other splitter I've seen around. Cycle time is slow but not too slow in my book. Would be nice if it was a bit faster though. Aluminium hydraulic pump might be getting a bit worn now as it doesn't seem to have the grunt it used to have.
Not sure on total tonnes that it's split but probably only around 300 - 400 at the most but more likely 300. Not much considering what some people split - I have a day job so for me it's more of a hobby. It's more than paid for itself now that's for sure.
I honestly can't think of a splitter that will get anywhere near it under 2 grand. It certainly has enough grunt to run a 4 way head providing it's reasonable wood. I'm yet to find anything it won't split and after sharpening the wedge with a 9" grinder it will cut across the grain in any timber I've thrown on it which says a lot - it's copped some nasty wood :)

Thanks Matt. Nothing beats a bit of experience with a product like that.

Now if you decided to modify it what would you do to it? Oil temp gauge? Log lifter? Oil cooler? Oil filter? And do you split your tough hardwood wet (freshly felled) or after some time when it already starts to split?

I plan on splitting it freshly felled to save on double handling it and I'll be splitting lots of stringy barks Inc Messmate (can't split it with a good hand wood splitter until it has dried a bit, it just bounces off or jams 5mm into the grain.)

Looks like a fun day coming up today, isn't it amazing how the log yard ends up with piles of blocks and short lengths that someone ends up blocking up and moving out of the way into one big pile.
Anyway at least you have men to help out sharing the load, I have to do the bloody lot myself in my spare time.
I'm happy that way, the thought of 1/2 dozen semi trained guys hacking and cutting up shorts in the sun in a hot log yard nicking gravel then still cutting with blunt chains or worse ro*ted chains is not my cup of tea.
Have a good day tho, one good thing them Stihls will take it even after the men have had enough.

can you show us the after the hard days use shot of sad manky blunt saws

Not a thing wrong with your old clubs Neil!, I hope when mine look as old as yours, that they GO like yours!:)

Nothing wrong with your toys either Jason and your getting better, as for me, I'm on the fast slide down hill, won't be long and I won't make finals unless all you newer guys stuff up.
I sometimes wish I stayed away from football and the bush, my old body might be in a lot better shape than it is now days.
Anyway when I'm pushed out of the arena I can still change a spark plug or two for the men who are in having a go.

To be honest I wouldn't modify anything. Mine needed the end plate braced after it bent the 40mm plate but this has been fixed on newer versions. I've had it going all day in some of the hardest stuff you'll find and it's never got too hot. I've split both green and dry stuff. Mostly dry though.

So the 661 has been released in Australia officially. Who's gonna go and buy one? :chainsaw:

If you can buy one in the UK for AU$1400 and the saw is made in Europe, then it's pretty clear to me that it has little to do with the dollar but the local Stihl distributor ripping us Aussies off, big time......Fark Stihl Australia I say.
Nope. The common currency is USD so if we pike it like we have against the USD that's what effects us. I spoke with the MD of Stihl Aus about this back in June and it doesn't mater if our dollar is strong against the pound or euro it's all based on the USD

I have the same one as matts but the revised version just on a year old. Has the stronger foot and winch to hoist it up vertical. Only thing I can fault is the ram seal has a weep. I'm going to try the old feeler gauge trick and see if it clears up apart from that it's been faultless and I split a lot soon after I bought it. Not a really quick cycle rate but not slow either. I split my pine by hand as I can split it faster by hand but hard woods it's the only way to go

How much did the prices come down when the dollar was on par with the US $?

We are getting shafted, there is no two ways about that.....

... and the only way Stihl Australia will stop people like me from buying OS is to lower their prices substantially. Threatening retailers will not work, all they are trying to do is protect their market, and in this country their overpriced relative to the UK...

Unfortunately it's the local retailers that miss the sale.
