Thanks everyone for the very helpful suggestions regarding the crap air filtration on the 461.....I won't be using it without grease again.....might even try a thin bead of silicon/polyurethane (I will ensure it is compatible first) as suggested.

I will be checking it every tank from now on.

I'll have a closer look at my saw, have cut some pretty hard/dry stuff and can't remember much dust getting through.

Going to chuck bid on that but he didn't want to post and only courier which is a pain in the arse

Yeah I got him to post it last time I organised delivery through pack and send cost me a fortune. It was a ships telegraph weighting 120kg from Brisbane to Geelong but lol. On another note what oil do I run in the gear drive?

Easy for me Rudi,,, I simply don't have the necessary skills to argue about 2 stroke oils for chainsaws. That should excuse me from the Oil debate.

And that's the best way Neil, you use the oil that works for you - end of story. I do the same. As long as you're with the manufactures recommendations or close by its all sunshine and roses.

I have dusted an engine I built 27 years ago. It was a BDA and I put it in an RS200 MkI Escort. Minor dusting destroyed the rings, enough damage to pistons to need replacement and took the hone off the bore, in effect glazing the bore....so the engine needed a full rebuild pistons upwards. Head was okay just re bed the valves back in.

What has happened to my saw looks worse than a minor dusting and certainly enough to root a motor I reckon.

As bad as it looks mate it will be OK unless it's been leaking for a long time. I had a HD filter element break on my ported Dolmar and it looked considerably worse than yours. As a precaution I pulled the whole top end and the insides looked like new which gave me piece of mind. I whacked a new ring in it while I was in there though despite compression still being 210psi - just to be sure :)
The one good thing about small amounts of wood dust is that they basically get combusted and exhausted out. However all bets are off with Redgum dust as that is well known to pack out the bottom end after sustained ingestion and kill saws. Takes a while to do that though. As Benny mentioned they did have issues with one run of the HD2 filters. Otherwise they're the best filter on the market for our dust and absolute crackers.
As far as Huskies sucking dust that's normal in dead hardwood unless you start using filter oil/2T mix. I've had to use filter oil with every single Husky I own to stop dead Redgum dust getting through.

Righto fellas, here's a potentially contentious musing, one most likely as stupid as a fence post.

If a reckless desperado hell-bent on legally parallel importing Stihl product into NZ and wholesaling it to a network of independant small engine shops themselves utterly aware of their obligations under our current trading rules surrounding parallel imported product, actually manged to get the first shipment through and onto the shelves of said retailers, how long would it take Stihl to plug the leak? Would a second and third shipment need to be on the water before the first one landed?

:D
