Can the average guy who fixes routine problems with cars change a clutch on a chainsaw. How much does a clutch cost?

You can do it quite easily.Remove the clip on the of the crankshaft, remove the sprocket and bearing and unscrew the clutch L.H. threads.
Whats wrong with your clutch, because you almost never change it on those saws ?
Should be about 35.00 US i guess roughly.

Well, there is nothing wrong with the saw. I just thought it probaly would need a clutch sooner or later. I just wanted to know what it involved.

Put stick under the piston through the exhaust port or grip the flywheel on the other side, so you can turn it off on the LH threads.

West texas, those are VERY bad methods to remove a clutch. the proper way is to use a length of rope stuffed through the spark plug port, or to use a piston stop. Sticks are a great way to wreck a piston in short order, and get crap in the engine too. gripping the flywheel is an easy way to shear a flywheel key.

Stihl provides special polymeer sticks to slide in trough the sparkplug hole. They fit exactly trough and you twist them between cilinder head and piston. Works great on smaller saws upto the 046 range. A clutch can do a long time, often just those springs get ripped and need replaced.

Old Saw, your comments are appreciated, I replied without looking at the repair manual again. There is a picture that shows how to use the stick as described by R Schra. My apologies. And 4pwr, if you don't have a manual that describes the procedure, you can view one online.

What is behind the clutch, I have an o26 given to me and it looks like the springs came off and chewed up what ever is behind the clutch, I didn't remove the clutch yet, looking for a service manual for the Stihl 026
