My first sharpening of a chain was a success! Lots and lots of beautiful chips today! Man, I worked that 5020AV in its 16" configuration and she ran and ran. I can now see the creek from my kitchen but now have to clean up all of these trees I chopped down before I take out the rest I plan to clear. I truly despise dealing with the skinny top branches...

The 5020 isn't getting fuel, bulb isn't filling. Now I have to take the dang thing apart. More than a little frustrated w/ not just buying a Stihl or Husky.

Yup and I could just be cutting wood and getting work done instead :D
It should have a filter stone in the gas tank. Check that, look for a kink in your fuel lines. U want wide turns on ur lines. They may not look kinked, but under a load. Like wot cutting the demand on the fuel line may make it collapse. Does ur primer bulb stay smushed? Or draw air? If it draws air ur filter stone may be hung up in a corner of the tank. I've had that happen too. If it stays smushed ur lines may be reversed. But u said it was running and then quit. Check those few things and let me know.

Went to the local Stihl dealer, asked about their mechanic looking at it. $130 quote. Then suffered a medical issue (service related) and taking a break. Pretty frustrated, I'm considering digging into savings to get a saw that just works.

No actual poulan dealers in your area? I just keep thinking that anyone used to working on poulans would be able to diagnose it within 15 minutes if they had it in their hands. I am still suspicious it ran hot though, and might still be too lean or suffered some scuffing/galling. but..it might be fine and just be something stupid like various of the advice tidbits up above. For peace of mind, easy to do, pull the muffler and just look at the piston, move it up and down, look at the cylinder walls behind it and the piston itself.

It can't be anything much lebowski. I had that problem on a poulan and it was crossed fuel line. Don't stress it's not like tuneing a carb.

I'm going to try and tear it down a bit today but greenlit to get something better as well. Looking hard at Dolmar 421, Husky 445, and Stihl MS251.

Ok, the fuel line and stone/filter in the fuel tank look fine, attached and not flopping around.

The bulb seems to work, pumps up and nearly fills and holds it.

The tank was still pressurized after the last attempt to start it two days ago.

I noticed that engaging the choke moved a lever on the carb. Disengaging the choke did not move this lever back to where it was. The on/off switch had no effect on this lever. My apologies for the lack of proper nomenclature.

Try squeezing throttle trigger, pulling the choke on a poulan sets the high idle for starting. If that don't release the lever u got a bigger problem.

Does it release when you squeeze the throttle? What is the exact problem with the saw?
Edit: missed the above post.

It releases just fine, sorry for wastin yall's time. Still a danged paperweight.

Unbolt the muffler and pull the plug, get a small flashlight and look at the piston & cylinder for scoring. You might be able to see with just the plug out. During your experiments with tuning it's possible it got run too lean, so it would be best to find that out first before you spend time messing with other possibilities.

Would that cause it not to start?
