This is'nt the only place I frequent on the net BUT... Saturdays I run Lavasoft Ad-Aware. Today after requesting hearing protection and connecting to Lord only knows what other sites I found a tracking cookie. Might be worth checking your computers also.

What was the cookie's filename? The website is in the filename for an IE-style cookie, e.g., "[email protected][1].txt".

Also, a cookie is just a text file: open it up and see what it says....

How'd you get 4? Don't they check to see if you have ordered arlready?

Of course, I didn't see anywhere where it said, "One to a customer.", so, maybe that's THEIR problem!

I cheated a little. The county just changed my address (and they got it wrong the first time around) so I have 3 addresses right now. Then there's my wife who needs a set at each address. And her parents live with us too. i should be set for a while when I'm done...

Oh, I doubt you could outdo me. I cleared out a whole cabin at camp way back when I was in high school. Nobody wanted to stay after the first night! :D

When I was younger, I would rally - drive through the woods trying not to hit the trees kind of rally. there's a rally in WA just down the road from Madsen's aamof. anyways... the initiation for new crew was to sleep in the same hotel room as me. at one rally, the new guy was getting a little jive about having to sleep in my room and he asked, "you saw logs or something?". Another guy gave it away by saying, "No, he clear cuts whole forests."... :rockn:

Up to you, of course, but I'm thinking you might have better success with a new, one topic thread. The freebie ear protection is gettting a lot of attention, might be camoflaging your carb question. At the rates they charge for starting a thread around here, it's worth a shot!

But if I put up a "gimme" thread, I'll get moved to the siberia of the new classifieds page (hope that last sentence isn't a sentence, if you know what i mean... :-O)

More Tracking Cookie

Like I said I'm not sure where it came from. It was'nt there last week or previous few weeks. I never  ;) view smut and when I do I usually run Ad-Aware before I shut down the computer. I DO NOT accept third party cookies so this came from somewhere I connected not an ad.

Thank You... NO!!!
After my hearing protection gets delivered; I will share the address with some of my friends... along with a MAY contain spy ware warning.

This is the Internet... I can appear as any sex or age... If I sit quietly and pay attention in a chat room I can probably seem to be your ideal when I finally communicate.
A few people actually make a living collecting and selling contact information!

No offense but cha seem kinda paranoid. I mean, almost every person I know that has had their identity stolen was because they used a credit card at a store and not over the internet. If someone wants your information, they will find it. All you would have to do is clear your browser and if you really felt like it, delete your temporary files and you'd be fine. It's not like they asked for your SS number ...

Not for me! I had my Ebay ID stolen about a year ago and they were selling Kawasakis using my name and positive feedback!!! Took me a few weeks to unwravel it all, change passwords, get Ebay to reset my Ebay account, etc. So now I am super-paranoid online, and I am worried that I am not paranoid enough.

BTW: I used to design computers and network systems for a living. I was a computer design engineer for about 15 years. Many ways to break into your system, and many ways to gain information that you may not be aware of. Throw in a little easy to get data like address and birthdate, and they are off and running.

Oh ... I know!!! Don't get me wrong. But my point was, there isn't much you can do if someone wants to get your passwords, ID, address, phone number, etc... Just don't do obvious stupid stuff like:

As for tracking cookies, most install just by visiting a site and most decent firewalls will prevent sending info packets. I'd be more concerned about data miners but same thing applies. I run my Adaware often (good to have Spy Bot Search&Destroy too for any Adaware misses, as they are on demand programs there is no fear of conflicts etc.), cookies in general just allow your pages to load faster in your browser, I clean mine periodically but keep ones for the sites I frequent (or you'll be having to log-in again).

Oh, and download the new ad-aware 2007 beta, it finds a lot more than the old version. The old version found 2 data miners, the new one is at 13 and counting.

Ian

Edit: Beta 5 is buggy, if you try it, find beta 4 or wait for the Apr 20th release of beta 6.

Wouldn't you just love to own a business, come up with a marketing plan to get product samples to business owners with safety/purchasing departments and have a bunch of dishonest folk try to scam you out of your product by lying about their "businesses"?

I started to feel just a bit like a thief after I signed up.

Guilty conscience talking here, inviting everyone here, including me, to do an internal audit of their "Ethics" departments.
