I think the chain is resting in grinder groove in first screenshot, he's holding the angle plate next to it, might be to just roughly show lowered hook angle.

So I'm looking to modify a chain in similar fashion, but I don't have a grinder, so what I was trying to ask here is, how do you all measure your hook angles?

I've seen other questions on chain sharpening here on the chainsaw forum, and this one gets a lot of traffic, thought it would be a good place to ask about hook angles. Figured someone here has played with them before.

I hog out the gullet first for chip clearance then use a file n guide to set the proper angles on the top of the tooth. It’s up hill on the tooth to the outside. Rest the file n guide on the top of the tooth angle. This sharpens only the top edge. File it till the edge is sharp across the top.
