No, It does matter and I guess we will have to disagree with that. I love those that talk about the "grid" as if it is some majical highway. Electricity is a proven science and it surely does matter where it is generated. I will ask you this. Can a generating station in Illinois feasibly send electricity to California. Can a solar farm in California feasibly send power to Illinois?
Does a generating Station in Mexico send power into the United States? Yes, A google search will tell you that. Yes some power loss happens through transmission and the distance that it travels. There are many reasons for it, Those lines get contaminants on them, That's why you see truck mounted pressure washers or helicopters washing them down, They use distilled water and They have it figured out how fast the water needs to travel to stop from being electrocuted.

Anyway, Debating with a fence post gets boring after awhile, You go get yourself another Shot or Beer, I'm going to get myself an Ice Tea, and stare out my back yard at this.

I am just wondering where the solar folks want all these panels placed. That does not mean I am anti solar. It does not mean II am anti-wind. It does not mean I am anti EV. I am just looking for a simple answer to a simple question. I really doubt I will ever get it though as well I guess I will stop there............. Those who drive EV's why don't you put a solar panel on the roof? Oh yeah because it would need to be 3 times the size of the car
Many who drives EVs do indeed have solar panels.

I can't speak for the solar folks obviously, but I certainly never thought panels on a roof was supposed to work for everyone. It won't, obviously, and isn't meant to. Those for whom it does work are welcome to do so. Plus we'll dam what rivers we can, plus we'll install wind turbines, plus solar farms, plus tidal, plus battery farms, plus pumped storage, plus nuke plants, plus natural gas and coal plants.

This isn't a one size fits all solution, just steps in the right direction.

Typical for someone who cannot support his claims with facts. It is very clear you have little understanding of power generation and distribution. I am asking you very direct questions and now you want to ignore them. Have I ever said there was not benefits to solar NO. Have I ever said there was not benefits to wind NO. What I am asking you is how far do you think any wattage generated by any solar panel (or any source) is going to travel. That should be easy to grasp

You are saying they have solar panels on their roofs? I have not seen it but there is a lot I have not seen

What rivers would you dam? At what environmental cost? Just wondering, not disagreeing wondering.

Check Google Earth, there are solar panels on roofs everywhere.

Not my job to figure out what rivers it makes sense to dam.

You're not interested in a conversation, just **** posting. I'm done with you.

Never said there was not solar panels on roofs. Please show me where I said anything close to that. What I have said and will continue to say is that it CANNOT be sent over great distance. That is science and if you want to argue science well you will lose.

Maybe this will be easier to understand.
1) I do not think there is much argument that today by and far the majority of electricity used in the USA is from coal fired power plants. Do you disagree?
2) It is widely known that Wyoming is the largest producer of coal by far. Do you disagree?
3) It is widely known that one of the highest costs of production is transportation. Do you disagree
4) If electricity can sent over huge distances and you accept the principles of points 1-3 then why are not all the US coal fired power plants located in Wyoming? There is a reason

I was a Power Generation supervisor at a coal plant in MI for 7 years.
I can say for certain that you begin to have issues when exporting power over a 150 miles or so. Of course this is dependent on several factors, so it's not universal, but nearly so.
What this means is you need base load plants spread out throughout the country and peaker plants in key areas that intermittently run as needed. Variable generating sources like wind and solar need peaker plants located near them.

This is EXACTLY the point I was trying to make but folks did not seem to get it. I am glad to hear your REAL LIFE experience to add some clarity. Thank you

Some here the word power grid and think it is some magic highway that power travels freely on unobstructed. Electricity is a science and not that hard to grasp. It does not travel (at least not well) long distances. It does not matter how it is generated that fact will not change. No power generated in Nevada will feed Illinois. You can feed it into the "grid" to lighten the load on surrounding generation plants but it itself will not feed long distance. Maybe this would be easier for some to understand. Can you run an standard extension cord from NYC to LA and power a light bulb?

Better believe politiciians will think so to make up for the lost revenue from GAS TAX?
In Illinois they tried raising the fees to $1000 on EV's but I am not sure if it passed. The raised the fees on all trailers to $140 then realized that folks with boat trailers were getting screwed so they dropped it back to I think around $45

we'd be building a hundred nuke plants per year
Best idea out there. And we gotta be starting now, all around the world. It is the safest, cleanest option we have, all things considered.

We are IDIOTS here in Australia for not building some. No earthquakes, no tsunamis, plenty of space...IDIOTS.

One of the first things we may agree on with a few points

I will not comment on you in Aussie being idiots as I do not believe that. You stay alive when about every other living thing can kill you. That takes some brains. I will say that building more SAFE nuke plants makes the best sense. Folks have a negative image of them from stupid **** like the "simpsons" Yes 3 mile island and Chernobyl were issues. They were bad ones but so are many other things that occur. Anyone remember Bopal, India? Nothing is perfect

FFS!!! this thread got HiJacked!!......Saws running on E85 to Electricity generation and power grid transmission?????

anyhow....my contribution to the current Convo.

A power grid map detailing the the individual power grids and how much energy is flowed between them.

Ha ha, yeah, well, on the nuclear thing we haven’t been the “Best and Brightest”. We do have plenty of things that creep and eat although tends to be over-dramatised a little. A few venomous critters here and there.

Nuclear has issues...and it can be dangerous, but burning coal is dangerous too. Modern nuclear power plants are a long way removed from Three Mile Is. and Chernobyl. That Bhopal one was some chemical plant I think, or was there a nuclear issue? Oh, is that what you meant...’other things’. Yeah, what was that HUGE explosion in the shipping storage not so long ago. Yikes. EDIT: Beirut.

Batteries, solar, wind, natural gas, these all have a place, and the technology is still coming along. Most houses and factories should probably have some solar on the roof, it’s just good economics.

I have a battery at home...and it isn’t really good economy. I mis-judged that.

Hydro is excellent...if you have a decent dam nearby.

But nuclear, in the bigger picture, is safer, and cleaner, than almost anything else. Right now, I see it as the best alternative. Coal, oil, and gas WILL run out. And before then, will get VERY expensive. Nuclear is good for a few hundred years or more. And gives us time to develop better tech.

I’d love to see the end to burning coal...or at least a massive reduction where it’s possible. Make what we have left last longer.

Hijacked alright. I’m innocent I swear, came in at the end, lol.

I couldn’t open that link, went a bit crazy on me.
