Can't vouch for the 7900 but I recently purchased a 390. I actually sold my year and a half old ported 660 to get the Husky. I don't regret it one single bit. It has 4 tanks through it now and it runs better than the 660 did with the dual port muffler. Damn good saw. The dolmar is 79cc and the 390 is 88cc. The 372 full wrap from Baileys is 74.5cc which would be a closer comparison. I'd get the 390, just my 2 cents. Mine was shipped to my door with a 28" bar & 3 chains for $816. My local dealer said he can't buy it for that at his cost.

Actually while you may think that the 7900 is closer to the 372, it's not. Bhp to bhp the Dolmar is at the level of the 385, the 372 is a JOKE compared to the 7900. Try one and you'll see. That was the determining factor in my purchase for the 7900. It has the weight of a 70cc saw, but has the UMPH!!! of a 85+cc saw. The 390 and 385 are both excellent saws, but these saws as with alot of the 4 or 5 yr old models are outdated with the technology that the 7900 has. For exact numbers, the 372 is at 5.4hp, that even less than the 7300, while the 7900 is at 6.3bhp, the same as the 385. When comparing saws, the 7900 really sits in a class all by itself. THERE'S NOTHING MADE FROM ANY OTHER SAW MFG OUT THERE THAT WILL TOUCH THE 7900 FOR POWER:WEIGHT IN THE 79cc RANGE!!!! (stock) So you know... :givebeer:

Read post #16 ;)

No stock 390 will run with a ported 660, I'll put my dp only 660 against any stock 390 any day......

The 395(cinderblock) is more of a contender for the 660. I know a guy that has a mild 660 and he is very happy with it, sold a 390 to get the 660 too, LOL. To each his own pete, go figure.

The last statement is true, no doubt about that! :)

...but the 7900 is not a newer design than the 385, they but appeared in 2002 or so......:greenchainsaw:

When you get old enough to run a 390 you can then come back and tell us your thoughts.

That is true if you like to have the work take longer.

If I wanted the faster saw and best power to weight, I would take the 660 - if I just wanted a large and smooth saw, the 390xp.

The 395xp, with its outboard clutch, would be out of ths question.

But it is really futile, as the 372xpg already is enough overkill here, with few trees over 20" diameter.

This is one of the few, well over 100 yo birch, surpricingly with no core rot....

This picture was posted in another tread, but it was really meant to be here.

It shows the Queen with 20" bar, and its first victim - the tree went down pretty fast after the picture was taken.

SawWitch is holding the saw.

Deram on. The 660 is underpowered for the 395. The 390 is the perfect contender.

Ha.

The 660/395 comparison has went on and on, too close to decide. Most will pick the 660 for the weight, power, and the overall name. Chew on that:biggrinbounce2:

Definitively not by name, but the weight difference makes the choise easy - enter the 390xp......:yoyo: :yoyo:

Whenever your in Michigan, bring that dual port MS660 and I'll run ya with my 390XP. I owned a Stihl once(MS310) , I owned a stihl twice(MS660) but I'll never own a Stihl thrice.:hmm3grin2orange:  :hmm3grin2orange: However, I would definitely consider the Dolmar 7900 or 5100.

So why not the 390?

Just because?
I would love to get a 390.

but for now with my budget I will be restoring a 066

Camp or came?

I think what you are trying to say is that the 660 is a wild bear, eats anything in it's path.:chainsawguy: :chainsawguy:

2k At band camp the bear came and I tried to start my 660 but o no the air filter was plugged with sawdust o no what to do. 2ks girlfriend came in and saved him with her 390xp cut the bear right in half. So 2ks girlfriend slapped him down and said next time listen to me on buying saws. :biggrinbounce2:
