Don't forget the buckshot. It is very effective on both 2 legged and 4 legged problems.
I'd pick #4 buck. It'll put a hurting on the 2 legged variety at close range and is small enough to have a good pattern for yotes and foxes out 50-60 yards with the right choke. 15 33 caliber balls can be very convincing on the receiving end.
FS, I'm a big fan of the Remington 870. Cost less, lighter, and IMO, more reliable!
Plus, you can change barrels. I have 28" vent rib with polly choke and 24" Hastings rifled slug barrel w/ cantilever scope mount. 20" sighted barrels are also available.
Took the big doe with it this year, and I've owned it since 1970! The Hornady Rifled Slug rounds send a saboted 50 cal pointed bullet (300 grains) at 2,000 FPS! Very effective on deer!

I’m going to second the 870. For sure if it’s going to be kicking around in the truck,4 wheeler, SBS, tractor, etc. Semi auto are great but do require a different level of care. REM 870 or similar Mossberg pump would work well for your intended purpose.
I concur. The 870 is a great utility shotgun. More robust than the Mossberg 500 if you actually shoot it. From what I've seen they are also more reliable under less than ideal maintenance conditions than the inexpensive semis. I don't know if it's still true, but for many years the single most sold part that Gun Parts (Numrich) sold was ejectors for the Mossberg 500 along with the attaching screw. As I recall they also offered an oversized screw as the receiver hole was often mangled and had to be drilled and tapped to a larger size. I had one of those and the ejector was something that I had to check and tighten regularly or the gun didn't eject reliably.
