Can someone please tell me what the difference in specs is for sure on the 346NE 50cc and the old screamin 346xp? Reason I ask is my new 50cc saw says its got 3.7hp at 9600 rpm and the old saw is (I think) rated at 3.4 at 14,500 or so am I just not seeing the specs online. Thanks

Old version: 45cc, 3.4hp at 9600rpm, max allowed rpm 14700, 10.6lbs.

New edition: 50cc, 3.7hp at 9600rpm, max allowed rpm 14100, 11.0 lbs.

The new one also has more torque over a wider powerband than the old one.

Thank you SawTroll the 9600 rpm thing had me going I didnt know they are rated max power at the same rpm whew!

One more big question and I will get off the subject, what about the cat does it help or hurt or indifferent all I do is cut firewood? I will leave the new 346NE alone because its new but my 359 its new too but well I got a real good deal on it and feel like I can tinker with it some.

Reason I ask is my 359 is an e-tech also and I put a non-epa muffler on and havent worked the saw yet but it seems a WHOLE lot more responsive and its a little louder, is it making a difference? I hope it does because that saw dissappointed me at first and I blamed the cat??? Am I just being an idiot or I am I just spoiled by having a 372xp first maybe? Sorry for such a long post thanks for the answers guys!!! Later :)

Troll, any idea what the projected HP is at higher RPM range on the NE 346?

The cat robs some power reputedly, and it sure makes the engine run hotter = shorter engine life.

:censored:

So with the bigger more powerfull 50cc engine and a non-epa muffler I may get more power AND longer engine life if I read that right?

If I was to do something like that would it affect the breakin on the new saw, if so what would I do different other than or limited to adjust carb IYO??
Thanks again

:biggrinbounce2: No such numbers, but I dare to say that the Husky xps tend to have a flatter torque curve at the top end than some other saws (two channel designs - not the MS361 and the better Dolmars)........:)

You may have to set the carb a bit richer if you put a non-cat muffler on it, which is pretty common practise among AS members......

Thank you SawTroll I figured as much but wanted to make sure thats all from someone in the know. Fact I just ordered a non-epa exhaust from (oops)B.....s for the 346NE the more I thought about it I knew I wouldnt be able to stand all that temp and back pressure on my new little hotrod motor. :)

After all I can always put the cat back on if needed.

Thanks

Are there any major cosmetic differences between the two that would help differentiate one from the other? I'm not sure our local Husky dealer even knows they've changed.

Which is the best one to have? Obviously the model without the cat. But is the NE better even though it has a lower top end?

Ihe most obvious is the silver colored clutch cover on the NE as compared to the orange on the original classic version. The recoils are a bit different too.

346xp, old vs new edition

Hi Kansas

The 346xp went throught several different versions since it's introduction in 1998 or 1999.
I have one from 1999 and another made in 2007.
The first one is a screaming machine. The new one is or was a e-tech style, a little slower at max rpms but just as fast in cutting.
The two saws have a different carb, coil, muffler, air filters and gas caps. Maybe more that I have not discovered yet.
I'm planning on taking the first saw and installing a new edition top end on it, along with some porting work too!
I would want to check with Spike before assuming every thing changes over nicely.
The 346xp is a great saw, mine see's lots of use.
