038av chain brake???

I have never seen an 038 without a chain brake. The brake assy is in the engine itself anyway, not the tank/handle assy. So yes, you can (and should) put one on there.

Sorry I was under the impression that the early 038av with the metal tanks came without chain brakes...

My 038 av hasn't got a brake either. I'm trying to work out how to retro fit using what I thought are the obvious parts, but it seems that the clutch cover plate may be different - it appears to interfere with the big expansion spring. All the other brake parts clearly fit. Comparing the parts I bought from Bailey's with an old 038 user manual makes me think there are (at least) two different versions of brake mechanism.
