Aluminum ain't the way to go. If you insist, at least use steel for the end spike. That little Aluminum spike is gonna be mashed flat in a day.
 
Run a long bolt through the end and sharpen a point on it. Replaceable until the aluminum cracks......and it will crack.
 
Take a dry tight fitting hardwood dowel and press it into the handle. Then put a little linseed oil, diesel fuel and used motor oil, etc to swell the wood a little.

The handle will not bend as easy.

Nice use of scrap!!!
 
Looks very well built to me. The idea of a wooden insert sounds very good. Now i need to build one. I've been wanting one just don't want to spend $60-100 on one either. Was the hook hand cut?

I plasma cut the hook from a piece of plate drop headed for the dumpster.
The aluminum mounting "ears" were also plasma cut.
Pieces were TIG welded
