.404 on 661?

.404 with in .063 or .080 in harwood works well , in soft woods .058 is a better match , the bar length also determines how big a chain you can pull .The power of the 661 you probably could run full house , though I have favoured semi chisel in my smaller 70 c.c. class saws . The biggest advantage of .404 is stretch and breakage reduction along with abrasive dulling prevention in dirtier wood or bark conditions !
 
This has been discussed several times before and yes there are pros and cons. the 661 was designed around a chain and speed. To alter that parameter will change the entire performance. It depends on what if this is practical. If you use a 36'' bar probably not a good choice. You are pulling a bigger wider chain at a high speed which will not do well. If you get the smallest of sprockets possible to slow down the speed of the chain pull a 30'' bar then maybe you might be impressed. Yes the 404 has some advantages under some conditions. It stays sharp longer but makes a bigger cut. Thanks
