I put up a post a few days ago about a Husky 268 I borrowed from my wife's grandfather. I am so impressed with the saw that I would like to pick one up for myself. I see there are 268 and 268xp saws. What is the difference? Also, is there another model Husky saw like this to consider? I want to stay with the 268 or something like it. I like how it seems to be quick revving/high RPM. Thanks for your advice.

The regular 268 is an open port design in the cylinder while the 268XP is a closed port cylinder. The closed port has some more ummph to it and revs a little quicker. If you want to stay in the same range, a 272XP is basically the same saw with a 52mm piston versus the 268's 50mm. Both are great saws. I own a regular 268 and love it. It's honestly my favorite saw.

268XP is a great saw, or you can get a 272XP which is the big brother. A 61 rancher, 260, 266, 268, and 272 are essentially the same saw with differences in the piston, cylinder, and porting.

If you are looking for a fixer upper you might consider any one of those saws and buy a 268XP or 272XP cylinder kit for it.

Definately look for the 268XP.

Not many around though. You'll probably have better luck finding a 272XP or a 371XP.

Good Luck & Take Care

Thanks for the advice on the other saws to look at. I'm not in a hurry, so I'll just keep my eyes peeled for a 268 or 268xp. Thanks again.

I would look for a 268, 268xp, 272xp, 365, 371xp, 372xp or Jonsered 2171. The 268/268xp/272xp should all take the same top end kits and both 268 and 272xp kits are available from Bailey's. The 365, 371, and 372 should all take the same top ends and a big bore is available from Bailey's. I think the 372xpw P/C from Husqvarna would be a factory big bore kit.
