Description
The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Arborist with the Urban Forestry Division. This position will be responsible for supervising a team of tree trimming and maintenance crew, including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline and termination procedures.

Maintaining a professional level Arborist services to ensure the health of trees growing on city property. As assigned, incumbents may: inspect trees for safety hazards and to ensure proper maintenance; develop and implement tree maintenance and safety protocols; conduct training programs; determine work assignments and schedules; coordinate special programs like "Adopt-a-Tree," storm preparedness, etc.; investigate claims of damage related to trees on city property; review, modify, and draft related ordinances; and serve as liaisons and consultants to other departments and agencies.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Tree maintenance, pruning, and disease/infestation care. Equipment used in tree trimming and maintenance. Proper safety procedures. Budgeting. Knowledge of urban forestry. Customer service. Presenting information to citizens and neighborhood groups. Organization and planning. Operating related equipment such as chain saws and stump grinders. Supervise employees. Provide a safe working environment for employees.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in agriculture or botany or related degree
  • Five years of tree maintenance experience related to the duties
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • ISA Arborist Certification
  • A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly talk, hear, see, perform repetitive motions, stand, finger, and walk; frequently reach, grasp, lift, pull, and push; and occasionally climb, stoop, crouch, and feel. The working conditions may contain environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
