The only thing I can say is if and when one purchases something off the internet from someone, they do not know they also do not know what they are selling is legit, period. Being able to get the serial number or not means nothing as many items are never reported as stolen and if so the owner may not even know the serial number of their missing piece of equipment and all the parts from such do not bear serial numbers. If one is queezy about buying hot stuff then better NOT do so off the internet when nearly every sale is between strangers.
Internet sales can be traced if you know what you're doing, same as a newspaper ad. They can get as close as what computer you used anyway..

I never bought anything used except a dog house and a vaccum cleaner. I am very cautious to sell or buy anything like a chainsaw from a stranger and never would have anyone like that at my house checking out my boat motors, chainsaws, carpenter tools ETC. In 1984 I had a 3 wheeler in the paper, and it got stolen. It was the night I didnt lock it up too. Never again. If I need a chainsaw, I go buy the exact kind that I want and I buy new , or through a dealer. I hate other peoples junk and so many times, the used chainsaw is so close to the price of a new one , that it would be foolish to buy it. There is an ECHO 590 on FB Buy Sell Trade. Said he was 70 now and it is too big. I believe him, but he wants $275 , but a new one is $405 with tax. Makes no sense to buy used.

Is it that crazy there that you would be shot over a chainsaw. I mean I live in a pretty “bad” city don’t think you would ever be stabbed or shot over a chainsaw or other meet up.
With daily News now telling us of cat thieves lookout carrying guns, and groups with baseball bats returning after stealing, if they see that you were filming with your cell phone? Judges letting THEM back out before ink dry and local contractor killed doing an estimate in a poor section, because he only had a pad/pencil and phone? My CS will stay in storage?

Plus the new one is supposed to have a guarantee..

It's not infallible but I do feel I can get a pretty good feel for sketchy buyers. If I'm a bit unsure I'll request a phone call or a phone number to text to. I use my phone number in ads, as a general rule anyone that calls is going to be legit. (and older LOL)
There's an app they can download from called a "spoofing" app. They can change their phone number to anything they want. I have no clue why google allows these to be posted I even wrote them to say that they were only enabling criminal activity. I got no response and the apps are still available.

Tracking a computer IP address is not finding who stole items AND people get scammed all the time from foreign IP addresses without them ever being found. THAT includes via the FBI. YES, they can and do catch some but very few stolen items get recovered. I had a 1953 Harly stolen from my garage years ago after I had it for sale in the front yard. Was out the night before I left into the Army and came home to a open garage door and NO Harley. Nearly every window in my house was broken out until they found one they could get in as they were the old crank out type. Called the police and reported it stolen WITH serial number as well as ALL the blood around the windows that I told them finger prints should be no problem. Came out looked around and said yep they got in through this one window and said "Chances are you will never see hid nor hair of the bike again. To this day not one piece of that bike was recovered and neither was there ever a single suspect of stealing it. Sad thing was I had dropped the insurance on it just a few days prior, thinking my home owners would cover it in storage in my garage to find out NO it did not. It did cover the broken windows but no Harley.

Is that why I'm getting all these calls from medicare "specialists" wanting to help me choose my insurance? I block their phone number but they call later with a different number which I also block.

That's called robo-calling. Caller ID phone numbers are easily spoofed. File a complaint with the FCC. Attempting to block these numbers is just a colossal waste of time!

Boy, you're sure right about that! I have several dozen blocked numbers and the calls keep coming in every day..

I saw a listing on CL 2 years ago in the next town over looking for info on his stolen 28 foot Sea Ray. A guy came and looked at one day. Two nights later someone stole in the middle of the night. He never got it back.
