The pic is from 1988- prolly purchased earlier in the 80's. Thats me on the right, my brother with the Stihl. My dad doesn't remember the model number or size, and I'm just trying to figure out what he had back then. This is the only pic we have of it.

I figure you guys can just look at it and know...

Thanks a ton!

jeff

Brad's saw looks like an 042. Notice the pie shaped notch in the upper right hand corner of the air filter cover. I don't believe the 048's have that notch.

Here's the specs for the 048 in my 1979 catalog. The 042 is not listed.

Displacement 76cc
Power Head Weight 16.3 lbs
Fuel Capacity 1.73 pints
Chain Oil Capacity .91 pints
Chains Available 3/8" pitch
Guide Bars Available 16", 20", 24", 28", 32", 36"
Special Options Available - Quickstop chain stop. Wrap around handle.

Brad used a early 042 tank and filter cover on his 048, the 048 also did not have that twist lock on the filter cover. 99% of the parts are interchangeable with the later model 042 and a little less with the early model. I have a early 042 here that I installed a 048 top end.

I have a neighbor with a 042 (68cc) and it has the bolts on the sides of the air filter cover. It has a .404 X 20" bar

I have a 042 with the bolts on the sides of the filter cover also. Are these models older than the models with the knob in the middle?

An 048 is a pretty good saw. One of my dad's buddies had one back when I was young. I never ran it but he was always outcutting the other fellows with it. I've always wanted one. There's one on Ebay now thats in need of restoration.
