cherry tree

I have a very old huge cherry tree (I believe it is fruitless) that recently has splitting, peeling bark. We just put a tree ring around the tree and laid a patio. Several roots were cut to accomplish the task (none bigger than 2" in diameter). Also, the leaves turn yellow and drop early (been doing this for about 2 years).

Help. Can I save the tree?
