While using the splitter the ram stopped in the almost full extended position and will not go either way. The engine sounds less burdened but runs fine. Upon checking the splitter was low on fluid. Could the problem be the pump? Could I check output at the pump by loosening the output line and see if it is pumping?

Start by checking the coupling between the pump and motor...a sudden stop in operation like you described sounds like a mechanical failure not low fluid.
