cut some firewood with a friend today

His saw is not running right now. so I offered to help him with the 290 and 180. This is the biggest and hardest wood I have cut with 290 so far. Saw is 3.8HP 20 inch B/C and yellow chain. Saw is Muffler modded.

Oh yes I was very impressed with the performance. Ate through the wood like a beaver on crack.

We went through 2 chains and had to sharpen one.

Don't mean to be an ass but I see why you went through 2 chains cutting little logs on assfault. Saw sounds good though and cuts nice next time get that stuff off the ground. Also not to be an ass but I think my homeowner Husky with a sharp chisel chain would shred that stuff quicker. Let the beatings begin........

yea I did hit just a tad a few times. But it did not dull chain at all.

yea we had most of it off ground actually.

Stihl is a top notch saw. I have found the chain makes more difference than the saw most of the time, a dull chain on a 395XP wont cut sheet.

Thanks for the video. Except for the rocking, that looks about right for a 290. Are you running .325 or 3/8 (.375) pitch chain? Full chisel chain (RSC)?

Now borrow/test drive a decent 60cc+ class saw with 3/8 pitch chain and see what you're missing. (This is the point where you contract CAD).

I hav seen that too. I mean a 260 with less power than mine could of done it with good chain maybe even a 250??

I agree, I think you dulled the chain on the pavement. It should cut faster than that. Also, next time just put the bar in the wood and push; cut out that see-saw motion.

I hand filed chain but I need to have them pro sharpened again

Yea I know it was a littl dull we sharpened one and got dull quickly just need new chains and have These pro sharpened

Seriously Josh, I really was'nt trying to be cold hearted at all. Let the saw do the work brother. It's not a misery whip, it's a chainsaw. If you sharpened the chain by hand do a search on chain sharpening. That saw should cut through that AT LEAST twice that fast.

A 180 with a sharp chain would have out cut that 290 on the smaller piece, at least.

If the wood is hard, sometimes I swap chains with every refueling (I regularly take at least 4 chains into the field). If you don't have the chains, a stump vise in the field can help you get the job done. Oh, and I use the Stihl file guide for my pitch, even in the field.

You should sharpen them when ever you feel the cuts getting slower. The chain will actually last longer than waiting to long. The saw looks to be in good shape like it is not to old or should I say not to much time on it. The bar shows that the chains have not been none to sharp. Remember that dirt, rocks, pavement ect. are a chains worst nightmare.
