This a ##### time here Downeast: not winter, not spring, just muck. Woods get impassable. It's suicide time or getaway time. :censored: So, we're off to Mobile for a visit to an old friend's place, driving Miss SWMBO through Dixie to get some real Spring.

Any ideas on what to see and visit --W. Va, Tenn, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana ? No Elvis, please. :dizzy:

Except for some not-too-pleasant sweaty stuff @ Eglin AFB Camp Rudder, we've never touristed Dixie.
BTW: SWMBO hates snakes. Eating them is worse. :givebeer:

My wife would appreciate your signature pseudo latin for When All Else Fails Play Dead. She teaches Latin at the local high school.

Too bad I'm not going to be at the farm at Barnum, WV otherwise I'd invite you for a stopover. You'd enjoy the sights there.

In West Virginia, with your outdoor interests, you would enjoy the very large Monongahelia National Forest with part of it being Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks Recreation Area. In not too long a time, with some warm days, there'll be morels in the woods.

Enjoy your getaway...Carl

just don't forget your teeth brush cause all you buy down this way is tooth brush.

So THAT'S where they went. I hear lots of people say, "That boy has no morels..."

OK you highjackers, don't quit your day job. Single stick drum roll and featherweight giggles you got. No rep. :spam: :dizzy:

Now for the OP's request........

The Alabama battleship in Mobile is a must see. Over in Pensacola FL, the Naval Air Museum is great too. If you like motorcycles check out the Barber Motorsports Museum in Birmingham its good.

Woodbutcher, you would enjoy the Smoky mountains in east Tn. If you could give some idea as to your route, I might have some more ideas. One would be the blue ridge parkway. But only if you are in no hurry. You can get on in west virginia and go to georgia, beautiful view....Lanny

No offense, but you posted a thread about tourism in the chainsaw forum, I hope you're kidding about keeping folks from highjacking it...

Smokies /Blue Ridge Parkway are on the route returning in mid-April.
Route heading south: PA thru MD. then W.VA-TN-Alabama. Any GTG's in late March-early April down there ? No saws or firearms carried on this trip. Just a radar detector ( heard some things about those small southern town speed traps ).

Pensacola/Air Museum are a do on the way to Elgin AFB.

Food--What else besides okra/chittlins/pulled pork/grits ? Keep those cards and letters coming.

Foodbutcher, only tourists eat chitlins and grits any more. W va and tn do not border, so you will need to go through va, try williamsburg. Radar detectors are illegal in some southern states, nc for sure ok in tn. You are right about the small towns, good advice would be to do the speed limit if you are off the interstate period. Gatlinburg tn is a tourist trap but they do have a world class aquarium. As for food, off the beaten path look for small restaurants with lots of trucks, means either great food or a foxy waitress....Lanny

North Alabama has the space center in Huntsville. Chattanooga has a great aquarium. On the Mississippi coast your have a space center and casinos. Should find plenty to do. Bass Pro has a new place in Daphne AL. on the east side of Mobile Bay. There are lots of events and things to do off Water Street in the old town or downtown Mobile.

Don't forget to eat ribs, shrimp, and this time of year you can find plenty of craw fish.

It might not have been logging I was doing Downeast, but I took care of all of the Aids to Navigation from Deer Island to Block Island (deep water) and I spent time in West Virginia as well. I will say that West Virginia is one pleasantly surprising states that I have ever visited. I agree with the person taht recommended the gorge and going rafting. Granted the Kennebeck is nice, but West Virginia is nicer for rafting, and coal country is unique as well.

As far as toothbrushes go, having lived in Maine, worked in Maine, and married a woman from Maine, I would say the toothbrush was invented in downtown Rumford, Maine.

I too am kidding, as I love your state, and since I am from "away" I only throw very small stones towards your great one syllable, only borders one other state, state. Enjoy the rest of mudseason, we're enjoying your melt-off right now.

Not just a "great" aquarium, but the BEST aquarium I've been to...and I've been to both coasts. Oh, and Chattanooga (or Chateaux Nooga) is the corporate headquarters for Krystal restaurants. That alone merits a sidetrip to pay homage.:)

Forgot about the chatanooga aquarium, it's great too. When you get to the gulf, make sure to eat po boy sandwiches, they rock....Lanny

If your anywhere near US Rt 19 in southern WV. you may want to check out the New River Gorge. http://www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/directions.htm
If you have some time and feel like some adventure you could try rafting.
