What was the purpose of the poles in the barn? I just got in from one of the most miserable days cutting firewood I ever had. Locust also. Yours looks like my favorite kind, just the right size for the stove, Joe.
 
Yes, theyre called tier rails. They are what the tobacco sticks used to hang on. My FIL is a tight old SOB and wouldn't buy square rails so he just cut locust poles to use. We bought the farm from them going on 4 years ago and we haven't raised tobacco in about fifteen years or so, so they are going to be put to good use for the last time this winter.

Yep, no splitting this time, they range from 4 to 6 inches. I even had a good little stacker with me.
