Hey all! I am looking to get into climbing, I used to many years ago while working for a less than safe small redneck organization in my off season but would prefer to keep my arms intact…For the passed 10 years i have worked as a hotshot and a heli-rappeller with the US Forest service but I am looking to have a better work/life balance and to actually make a living. With my prior experience I have the tools to fell timber and experience around saws but would like some advice/guidance on how to get into climbing, with the end goal of having my own small operation/becoming a contract climber for bigger operations. Thanks.

Your experience sounds badass, and it will be helpful, but I’d still strongly recommend you go work at a reputable tree service that has a climber who is willing to train you. There’s no substitute for having an experienced climber watching your back and stopping mistakes before they happen, and offering instruction when you’re not 100% sure about something.

Get a few books and learn more about trees. Tree Climber's Companion will help you a lot on cutting, climbing, and rigging. Get some actual books on trees, their botany, and some good information on how to trim properly. Anything by Shigo would probably be a good study.

If you wish to be a contract climber, get the literature, study up, and get a dual ISA certification as an arborist and one as a climber specialist.

An excellent climber that does nothing but ruin trees won't get too many jobs except as a removal specialist.
