I keep quite a few around with the intent to use them to make cutting tools for wood work, scrapers, lathe tools, etc. So far in 20 years or so of collecting I've made one special tool but I have plenty of tool steel in the shape of worn out files if I ever need them.

They have many uses, ice pick, scribe, tooth pick, crab stabber, the list goes on and on.

Cut them off sharpen one end and soften the end you will hit they make a good center punch for small work. I made a butcher steel out of an old rattail file a saw file might make a small one. On practical machinist the were talking about sharpening used files by letting them soak in a mild acid. Anybody tried this with saw files?
