An Axe or a maul is capable of much more splitting force than one of these. I think it would be cool if you had all you wood stacked in the basement and you came across 1 or 2 pieces that you want to make smaller where trying to swing an ax or a maul isn't going to work with a ceiling. For doing any real splitting I think it will take a long time. If you are physically unable to swing an axe or a maul this might be a solution for splitting a few pieces but not ideal for someone looking to heat with fire wood.
 
I'd have to agree with Dave. If you were processing some wood that splits real easy to begin with, it would probably work OK. God help ya' if you've got a pile of elm.
