What do you guys/gals use for protecting your ears when cutting wood? I don't like the ear plug (small squishy things) nor the ones on the rope. They don't feel comfortable. I see most dealers have the helmet/muffs/faceshield combo but I don't fall trees. I only cut when they are on the ground. So please give me some suggestions on what you use.

I prefer the plugs , and there are many different kinds . I prefer this over muffs as the muffs get to warm for me . There are many different plugs , if you have a buddy in the industrial world I am sure he could grab a few of different ones for you to try . Fall and spring the muffs are fine for me .

When not using a helmet, I use a good set of shooter type hearing protectors. I also have a set of rubberized plugs that I sometimes wear underneath. You will want to compare different brands and find one that is tight fitting and reduces the noise the most. All hearing protect shows the decibel reduction.

Peltor Optime III. They are 35dB reduction and comfortable.

I chose them after looking at what the guys marshalling jets at Heathrow were wearing.

+1 we wear these at the airline I work for! Being the OSH rep I make sure the crews have the good stuff. They are a decent price too, have a spare pair for cuttin buddies or when the warden is cranky!

i have always had Peltor Optime II muffs.

but after doing some milling for the first time with the 2094 im deffinatly getting Optime III's :)

I see my dealer has this in stock.

Does anyone use these? I'm thinking hearing and eye all in one.

I wear saftey glasses now but this looks like more protection.

I have one of these for the summer, but I always seem to grab my full helmet set instead.

I used to wear safety glasses but after taking a piece of shrapnel in the cheek, i switched to the mesh face shield - what a difference. It is like night and day as far as how your visibility improves vs. traditional glasses IMHO. - plus, obviously, it protects a hell of a lot more of your face & even neck.

I usually double up on plugs and muffs myself. I'm half deaf in my early 30's already.

Ive got some plugs, and some shooting earmuffs. Just depends on how long Ill be cutting.

Might want to ask Stinkbait what he uses. I dont know what he wears, but they look comfortable, and I know he messes with a bunch of loud saws.

I guess I am the odd man out, I usually do not use hearing protection at all.

Granted I do not cut professionally anymore.

huh? Huh?

Here's the combo I was looking at but I'm afraid it would get to hot in the summer. Fall and Spring OK but not summer.

My Gripo isn't hot, my Labonville Competition Chaps are hot.
The muffs might claim 30dB NRR, but they are louder than 29dB Peltor muffs (Ultimate 10). If the Gripo is $30 plus shipping, (it was $22.50 when I bought it) I'd look for the Peltor helmet combo instead.

I use these for felling AND bucking. When bucking, I generally have the face shield pulled up, but not always. I've been using the Stihl system for years. Just ordered the Peltor from Bailey's because of the rear rain shield and front sawdust bib between helmet and mesh screen.
