I recently scored a bunch of firewood for cheap, most of which is this dense, heavy wood. It splits OK, a few pieces stringy but most clean. It is pale yellow inside, with a very few pieces light orange here and there. Its from a road clearing crew here in the high desert, so I'm guessing it could be a windbreak tree, or placed next to the road by the county. It is hard and heavy. No significant smell.

Top bottom and right side is the mystery wood. Piece in the middle is pine.

This is appearance of a split piece:

Any help would be appreciated, maybe Ash?

Thanks guys

Yes there was juniper, pine and grey barked Chinese elm in there too. The seller told me there was euc and oak in there, I told him politely that there wasnt one piece of those in there. So he was no help, he had no idea what kind of wood he had.
