I am just now starting to sell my wood, rather than discard of it or call someone to pick it up. I got some questions about what some things mean. Pulpwood, chip-n-saw, ply logs, hardwood pulpwood and hardwood saw logs, umm, what other terms may I encounter?

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Around here, Chip-N-Saw refers to a type of machine, which basically consists of four chipping heads which chip a log down to a square (or rectangular) cant which can be resawed into boards, rather than a headrig saw that cuts slabs off the log to get a cant. See the following:

I'd never heard of a log grade called CnS before, but it makes sense. At the mill I worked at we cut logs from 4"-9" dia. 9ft long into a 3.75" X 6" cants to get 3 2X4s - the rest got chipped away rather than a bunch of slabs jamming the main chipper up. We could run over 21,000 9' logs in a 10-hr shift. It's a very efficient setup, though I don't like the quality of rough lumber it generally produces.
