The first two pics are of one tree and the third is another. I think these are hickory but I am not sure. I haven't seen them with the leaves. Anybody?

My guess on this tree is poplar. Anybody?

Maybe a Shellbark Hickory. If you can, grab some leaves that seem to be common around the base of the tree and take a pic of those. If it's shellbark the leaves will be big and flat with toothed edges.

I am going back up this weekend, I will look more closely for nuts, dead leaves or any hints that will help. The branches don't start for like 40' or more.

Trimmmed, great website, thanks.

Pictures from further away looking straight at the trunk would give us a better idea of the actual bark pattern. Those shots straight up the trunk kind of distort the patterns. I agree, the first three look like black cherry.

They look like Black cherrys to me and the other looks like a dead cotton wood or pine. Where in NY are they?
