We have a 40-year-old tree that I believe is an inland ponderosa pine. It is close to the house, and we are in a fire-prone area (Malibu, CA). The tree appears to be very healthy, but its crown has become a thicket of both living and dead branches, mostly 1 to 3 inches in diameter. Other ponderosas in the neighborhood are very open and transparent, bu contrast. We plan to speak to local "tree experts," but none advertises himself as an arborist. What is the correct method to thin/trim this tree? Should only dead branches be removed, or live ones too? Any other advise would be most helpful. Thanks!
