husqvarna 44 Rancher Practica

I started cleaning up the old Husqvarna 44 Rancher today. This one is cleaning up nice. I know both the original owner as well as the 2nd owner. I am the 3rd and hope to get this one running again and for several more years to come. It was shelved after the wrong chain was used and wore down the sprocket. I guess somewhere along the line the clutch was misplaced. So after a thourough cleaning and a carb kit I will need replace those. Other than that this saw is complete.

Lol, I cleaned it during my breaks at work. I used a product called Quicksolve and some hand cleaner wipes and compressed air.

Does anyone know if a Husqvarna 50 Rancher clutch will work on a 44? It is an early model with a silver tag. Similar looking clutch.

The white tops meant Practica/Rancher back then (late 1970s, early 1980s). They aren't the most "inspired" models regarding performance, but higher quality saws than todays "Ranchers" and "Farmbosses".

I should be able to try this one out soon. Clutch is on the way and only other thing it needs is a carb kit. Saw is nearly perfect which is amazing for its age.

I got the clutch in today. Just need to find the washer and pick up a carb kit. I was thinking of a 16" bar and chain for this saw. Does that sound about right? If so what bar and chain combo is recomended? This will end up being my "small" saw once I get a 60-70cc up and running.

Any particular brand of bar or chain work better than others for this setup?

Stihl RS .050 chain is by far the best. An Oregon pro lite bar would serve you well.

All finished. Ended up with an old Windsor 16" bar and Oregon chain. Its a start. Runs good, sounds great. I really love how the older saws sound.

Nicely done! Those are swell little saws. I had a nice ported one I sold off, which I rather regret doing...

Nice seeing someone else with one. Got my dad's that he bought new in 1980 or 81.
Still runs great just afraid to use it - had issues finding parts when the original coil died.

That's the longest I would want to put on it - but as always, opinions on that will vary. They no doubt came with 13" bars over here....
