Great looking Mcc there! Do you have a little "inspection" stamp on the bottom of your starter? I was cleaning up the better of my 2 sp81's and noticed it.

It does. You can see it in this pic here.

Great old iron there Brad...

Brings back memories of the one yard tool Dad never let me screw with...

Hmmmm maybe that's why I have a pile of Stihl stuff now  Making up for childhood neglect with a latent dose of bucking 'the man'

Exhaust Gaskets

Cool saw Brad.

As far as tuning--as you probably already know, the old saws generally ain't too critical about their tune. Clean the points and regap, reset the coil air gap, and carb kit. Tune by ear. You may want to check and/or replace the exhaust/muffler gasket--I've seen even well preserved saws with the exhaust gasket pretty crispy......

I use a Dupont product called Kryton on gaskets. It's made for O-Rings under high heat. It definitely helps to soften up all the intake gaskets and I've used it on gaskets in other places of my old saws with no apparent ill effects.

I'm working on a Super Pro 70 right now--basically the same motor as the PM700...........I have a leak somewhere in the fuel tank......

Ignition ??

But now I gotta know--is it electronic or points ignition?:)

Casey

Brad II --

Was looking at your Air-Filter cover. Hard to read...
Does it say "Electronic Ignition" ? If so, ...........
[my saw so says]

I have a MAC PM10-10 just like this.
The last digits in the Series ### are -- 12.
Most/all -- "12's" are Electronic Ignition. The last one's made in this type.

Kinda like the Ronco Rotiserie Ovens on TV -- "Set It and Forget It !"
Air-Gap is .012", I believe.

Fantastic saws--pulls 20"+ great.
And, yours is nice.
Regards.

Shoe contact, seems odd. Maybe remove springs and check fit of shoes to drum. I wonder if it was kept at high idle and partial shoe engagement would cause that.

Mac PM700 Bars

Which of these bars would be more correct on this PM700? I do like the way the black one matches the color scheme. LINK or LINK. I'd actually prefer a 20" or 24" bar.

Brad III -

I also have a PM700 like yours. It has a RSN 20" bar on it. Seems to have the perfect kind of balance/feel to me w/the 20" on it. These are not heavy-weight type power-heads. Mac actually authorized up to a 33" bar...
PM800 "feels" better w/ a 24".
The power is easily there to pull longer bars, just commenting on the balance/
feel/usability.
Got big wood? >> 24" ?

Here you go Brad, a shot from a early '80s brochure. I lists applicable bars from 16 to 28". I have a 16, 20, and 28 for mine.

Either of those bars that you linked to will work fine....
