log splitter blows hyd oil out of tank

hello, i recently purchased an old Didier splitter, the ram will move both directions (it is kind of jerky), but will not build pressure to split wood, it stops as soon as it hits the wood. also, the hyd tank cap is stripped...when i change control valve direction after one or two cycles...it will blow cap off the tank. pressure leak thru control valve?? im stumped...
