Looking for a good Husky (394, 395?)/Stihl (660?) for the occasional milling job (I currently have a bunch of oak, maple, hackberry, and cedar in my backyard/driveway that desperately needs milling!). Interested in something in the 70-90cc range. I'd like to spend no more than $700 if possible. I'll need to run a 28-32 bar because some of the oak I have is at least 28". I'm new to the site, and new to milling, though I've been reading lots about it on various sites.

Where in TN? You may want to contact mdavlee to see if he is close enough to help you with your milling. You will need a stout saw, long bar, auxiliary oiler and patience for 28" logs. Personally, I would find someone with a portable band mill and see if the would split the wood with you for doing it.

I should have clarified, the oak logs are 28in diameter, but only about 4-6ft long. I'm in Murfreesboro, TN. Longest log I have is a cedar, maybe 15ft, maybe 16in diameter.

@mdavlee is a good contact for milling info. I picked up a not too much wrong with it project 394 from him a couple months back for a good price and he has been kind enough to offer advice on bar lengths and suppliers to get me milling.

I would be tempted to buy that 3120. On the premise of better too much saw than not enough. But it is a lot of saw. Then buy a 36" mill if you are buying and not building and a 42 ish inch bar so you can take advantage of the whole 36 inches of mill should you need. How heavy would the set up be? Heavy with the mill on there. But the weight can work to your advantage once the mill is in wood if you set the wood at an angle.

If you are going to cut 28" oak you should be looking for a 90+ cc saw.

Here is my brand new $270 delivered Huztl 660 kit saw making it's first milling cut...7 minutes to get through 24"X10' Red Oak condensed into 2 mins:

Do they cut like the real thing? I'm really considering buying one, seems like a great way to learn the ins and outs of a saw while saving some money.

More experienced forums members have said 95% of the performance for 20-25% the cost. Works for me and if you do a little modding you can get >100% OEM stock performance...muffler, squish, ports, etc.

Any expensive tooling needed to put them together?
No expensive tools required...watch some of the build threads and youtube builds by several of the guys. You need a T27 Torx that is $0.95, and a few other common tools plus some sealant like threebond 1184, yamabond or similar($10-$15)

Huh. Sounds like there's really no excuse NOT to build one then... :)

I've got a 2013 Jonsered 2188 no bar or chain with a full wrap handle I'd do $650 shipped.

Mike Lee has a decent looking 288 Lite here that needs a new home. It was ported about 1.5 years ago by Mike. It just got a full rebuild a month or so back. Mahle decomp cylinder with a plug installed. Let's start at $700.
