Good history, I do recall the story of ST Nicholas throwing money in windows for dowry.
See my initial understanding of dowry was a ring to the would be Bride as compensation to the parents had the hymen been penetrated and promises broken. Hence: engagement/promise ring tradition.

Seems that's called a bride fee but the dowry means 'money' though often property to the Groom for taking her for life. Which makes sense.

Abviosly different in different cultures and times.
