Basically a photo dump. Posting from my phone which I hate doing. Might add more detail later.

Log is abot 38 on the smaller end, maxed to 46? Trimmed to 8 feet long. Have smaller pieces from the end to cut later.
Quarter sawed the top and bottom.

Pretty smooth cut.
The mill did move a little on the 2nd cut so I had to reestablish flat.

The log turned out to be 2 trunks that partially grew together.
Not as much clear wood as I wanted, but added character.

Nice log! Anyone know what causes the black speckles that kinda look like shotgun pellets?

I’m running into the same deal on a similar sized sugar maple. Looked promising…nope 2 trees on the inside. Tons of character though so makes up for it. View attachment 1064307
I keep seeing this guy on youtube who takes slabs with all kinds of imperfection and uses an epoxy mix to fill them in and create a smooth surface while keeping the characteristics of the wood. Seems like a cumbersome process but the end result is amazing. Can't recall the name of his shop.

That’s the fine line you walk. The best slaps generally need epoxy work. It’s appealing to the ones who know how to do it. It’s a process but also an art form.

I don't see any rays in what looks to be the quarter-sawn cuts. Are you sure it's White Oak?
Fairly sure. It was felled in Jan, so no leaves. I was told it was oak. Looks and feels like oak. It's definitely not red oak. I know there are other varieties, and I'm not an expert. That's my best guess though.
Keep in mind
-The surface is rough cur right now, so things won't show as well
-Rays show best in perfect 90* to grain cuts. I don't have much of that. Most of it would technically be closer to rift sawn.
-The pictures aren't necessarily in the best light
-The wood sat under a tarp for a couple of weeks, so the details won't necessarily show quite as well as when it was fresh cut. And the staining probably doesn't help either.

Blacktail Studio?
I agree, it looks amazing. Once this stuff dries I'll see what I can do with it.

that's mostly spaulting in maple
I think he was referring more to the double trunk. You can have spaulting all the way across a log and still have "clear" "solid" wood. Having 2 separate logs grow into one gives you a split down the middle that might add character, but takes away 4 inches or more of solid wood in the middle of the log that can only be used as a character edge or to be filled by epoxy.

Glad I let these sit stacked on the rest of the log for a week or so while I made space in the garage; when I went to pick them up I found a very cold carpenter ant chilling on one of the pieces. Guaranteed there's a queen hiding somewhere in there. So I'm going to have to build an insulation panel kiln around the wood so I can heat it and kill the bastards.

The 2 slabs I cut from the center split into separate pieces. The top and bottom slab stayed together, at least for now. I want to put the 3 full pieces on the bottom of the stack before I pile the smaller stuff on top. The first piece on the floor is flat, not curved like it looks in the picture.
And damn these are heavy to move by myself. I'm coming off a year and a half of no heavy exercise due to a torn rotator cuff and surgery to fix it. But I'm slowly getting back in shape.

How about aroma? Should have a pronounced smell - like bourbon. How about some good close-ups of the end grain?

Yes oak + iron/steel = stains
Based on the growth rings, shouldn't there be some spreading of the blue stain, not pin-point dots? If it is steel shot, it would have been shot multiple times over the years to show up like this. If lead shot, it wouldn't stain but it's still too spread out over the growth ring

Iron from the chainsaw chain. From cutting.
When that was fresh cut none of it was there.
That is from whatever residual iron came from the chain reacting with moisture and the tannin in the wood.
