Been looking at cylinder kits for my old MS 170 . They state it has to have the later design coil and fly wheel . How do I tell which one I have ? Anyone know ?

If you can supply a serial number, I might be able to tell, at least, what's on your saw.
I believe it's right below the muffler.
They show another coil, but that wasn't used in the US.
Getting it from an overseas supply might explain why they ask that question.

Thank you ! That helps . I will check the number of my saw .

Here is a bulletin, not sure if it was the one I was looking for. I am busy at the moment.

OK. I got the message after the first 5 quotes. LOL
Sorry. Its not in the Stihl data base anymore.
Either 1) the serial number is wrong 2) Too old for them to keep info
Cant give you a positive id. Sorry. Plus, it might have been replaced ?
But, if you read the bulletin that was so graciously supplied,
your saw falls in, after the change.
So it appears that it would be the newer style.
That bulletin is dated 5-2000. So that change was over 20 years ago.
You better contact them.
