well i know it's not a chainsaw but hey trimmers are fun too! i guess i must've been living under a rock cause i wasn't aware stihl made a 4 stroke engine. i want to take it apart just to see how it works. so those of you that have these how are they holding up for you?

Nice score FXDL...keep us posted how it works for ya...

Looks like you got the same type of sagebrush in New Mex as we do here in the So Cal Mountains...big ones can be really tough.

I have a Stihl FS250...a two stroke model...with the bike handle. It really kicks azz in the sage, as I put the 3-blade brush knife on it and it's wicked on anything up to about 1".

On smaller sage you can angle the blades right under the roots, and rip the whole thing out (dirt dulls the blade...keep a cordless mini-grinder handy)

Also...a foresty helmet is yer friend when running a brush-clearing trimmer...

I hope Stihls 4-stroke are better than these box store POS's.

Till they work the 'bugs" outa the little 4-strokers, I'll stick with 2, and pollute.:greenchainsaw:

What's a little smoke, when we're pumpin how many thousands of gallons of crude in the gulf?

Is it heavier than stihls 2-stroke? Hope it works well for ya.

well the only other trimmer i've had is a toro. it's about the same weight. from what i've read on other sites about the only "problems" anyone has had with these is you gotta run full synthetic at 50:1 and run the piss out of them or they get alot of carbon build-up on the valves. i seen a few postings of guys running these on stihl ultra 50:1 and no problems at all

I have an FS90 that I like a lot. However, the head angle is too shallow, being apparently designed for someone under five feet tall, so it is hard for me to trim a flat plane with it. I'm only 5'9" so I can only imagine what it is like for a tall guy to use. It is great with Stihl's little circular chainsaw-type toothed blade. That is a very useful combination.

I still have my old Echo SRM-2400 from 1994 that I used commercially for years. I actually like it better than the Stihl for string trimming. It just feels right, and has a better head angle. The pull cord hangs out all but about six inches, but no problems starting it, even with only 6 inches of pull. LOL it is so beat up, it looks like total crap, but runs perfectly.

I have the FS100RX, same motor as the FS110. It's great. You will love it.

Make sure to adjust the valves every 10 - 15 hours of use. It's an easy job. Your dealer should have given you the feller gage for it, if not you can trim down a 0.004" one to fit in the slot in the rocker arms.

There's a thread about this somewhere.

:agree2:

Guys here like to bash Echos from time to time. Echo OPE may not be very glamorous but is very dependable. Kind of like the blue collar guy who never skips out on work, is on time every day, & gives a full day's work for a full day's pay.

Yeah, I agree.

I'm in a dilemma though. My SRM-2100 that I bought well used in the late 1990's is finally getting tired. Not a problem with compression or power but a combination of little things. The starter is starting to slip, I rebuilt the carb two years ago and it's acting up again, I used a Home Depot three bladed weed cutter on it last summer and damaged the threads for the head attachement, the feed head is almost worn out, and it's time for fuel lines.

I'm thinking of putting new fuel lines on it, tuning it up and selling it.

I'll replace it with an SRM-225 or a Stihl FS-55R.

Which model is favored here?

For a trimmer, I'd still go with a 2-stroke, simply because of the extra weight of the 4-Mix powerhead. I have a KM110, and it's pretty hefty.

Its funny... I dont think my km130r is that bad weight wise... Its definately a trade off I suposed, but the fact that it just mows the long grass down and hardly ever boggs down is just worth it to me... but then again... I'm 6' tall and 240#'s so throwing that thing around is like nothing for me... the biggest problem I have is my sides will cramp later at night if I weed wack all day... from the side to side twisting I do... Guess I need to stretch more... OR get my mrs to *cough* excersize with me more... :monkey:

i agree i don't notice much weight difference, but man this thing has serious power when the field grass is thick. i love it
