My Friday the 13th Mishap....

Figured I share with you guys what happened when I ignored my rewind troubles.... I built up a Jonsvarna 2171/372 saw (just for the heck of it) and I've been using it for about the last year. The engine has been a champ... I replaced the bearings, seals, threw in some rings, and did a moderate port job. The rewind has been giving me troubles, though... not taking up properly, catching, etc. I replaced the spring and the cord but it really didn't seem to make much difference. So "the hell with it" I figure, it works well enough. So I'm cutting at the base of a juniper stump (the wife wants to make a table) and .... VIIIPPP!!! Looks like the rewind is junked, along with the flywheel. Looks like the coil is ok. I don't really know what happened, but I'm guessing the spindle was too worn and got wobbling on the shaft.

I finished my day's cutting with an 026. Here are the pics.... what a mess!

Actually, it made a really gnarly "crushing-a-beer-can sound." I'm sure it would have been impressive if I hadn't been wearing ear protection.

Indeed! No biggie, though. I think I have the flywheel and the air dam... but I am going to have to find a Jonsy rewind. Looks like the 044 will see some action this summer!

Surely that`s a mess, could have been much worse if the flywheel had grenaded. Should be a fairly easy fix, especially if you have most of the parts already. Best part was, you wern`t hurt.

I was thinking the same thing.. feeling how if came apart (bound up really tight), I'm pretty surprised the cover contained it. Here's a little more on the damage... click on the pic for the video....

Yes! I really like that little saw. I know it's not first on the performance list these days, but, ported, this saw has a bucketful of punch... it's light and it handles well. It essentially cuts 90% of all my wood these days. The larger saw only comes out a few times per outing.

i've been reading all i can lately on porting the 026 as i would like to have mine gone over. i want to out cut my dad's 042! my goal is to take the 026 as wild as i can and still have it be a reliable work saw. problem is i'm just a newb so most of what i read is all greek to me, but i'm sure i'll catch on sooner or later.

again sorry about your saw, glad it was only minimal damage.

i had the same thing happen to my 044 bout a year ago . when mine exploded it did just that . it let go at wide open throttle . and gave me a good thump to remind me of why im male instead of female. its funny now . it wasnt to dad gum funny that day

Holy smokeso! I thought you'd be a Jonsered fan, Niko! Is there something I should know about on the 2171? I figured the differences between it and the 371 were just cosmetic. This saw had no troubles when it was all orange, but I wouldn't have blamed the red parts for this event... I figure I'm just a cheap jerk who bought worn used parts.

I was mostly joking, but I don't know the compatibility status of every single part - and your earlier starter issues on that saw made me a bit sceptical....
