Got a new saw this week to try my hand at milling. I have a Granberg 36" mill and have made a mini mill but have yet to do anything do to not having enough time. The saw I bought is an 880 with a 25 inch bar with .404 chain. I would like to change it to .375 so I can get at least a 36" or larger bar for it. Or should I stay with the .404 bar and chain combo. I had picked up an 066 and have a bar 32" and skip tooth chains for it to use but couldn't pass up on the 880. I would be using it mostly on walnut, oak and maple. Thanks for any help. Heres a pic of some of my Stihl family.

Since you'll have to buy a new bar anyway, might as well go with the smaller kerf of the 3/8. It'll be 0.063", and the link count will be different than the same length 066 bar.

Enjoy the 880. :msp_biggrin:

+1 41-42 inch bar maxs that mill out I run 880 with 3/8 0.063 41 inch bar. I think a 42 will work as well. Max it out you never know.

I looked on Baileys and didn't see a bar for the 880 in that length. I did notice that the bar studs appeared to be larger than the 660. Do I have to change them out or do I have to get a bar specific for the 880. Where can I find a bar for the saw?

42" oregon powermatch plus/MS880

This bar started out as 404 all i did was swap out the tip with a 3/8 one ,i run 3/8 .063,just have to sort your drive link count ,i am running 134DL on a 7 pin rim bit its tight to get on with a new chain so 135 would probably be better if your gonna run an 8 pin

Stihl Big Mount

Stihl 08,050,051,075,076,070,088,090,MS076,MS880, and I think S10 all have the big bar mount.
It's not the same as 066, MS660,046,056, etc.
Hope this helps.

It is a Stihl large mount. They sell them.

And I'm sure there are plenty of us here willing to take the 880 off your hands for a reasonable disposal fee :)

Most of the S2 mount bars 41" and up are .063 gauge.

https://www.baileysonline.com/itemdetail.asp?item=BAWP+42+BS63&catID=664

but they take either .375 or .404 pitch, just match your sprocket/rim.

/edit - in anticipation of getting an 880 I checked on the Oregon site, and apparently the only rims they sell for the 880 are .404

I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure the .375 drive rim needed is oregon PN# 68210 (7 pin)

I think it would just be easier to have all the chains the same size(404 or 375), that way when you sharpen your extras you don't have to fumble around trying to figure out what's what......
You might be able to just glance at a chain and 'know' what it is, but I can't....

Nice stack o' saws!!!

I have some peg board setup with hooks that I hang my chains on. They are categorized by the pitch and length in inches and drive links. I also have them listed per saw so I will know what chain goes to which saw since I do have Stihls with the same pitch and size bar as my Huskies but the drive lengths are not the same. Now I will have to add a spot for the .404 chain.
