New to tree climbing equipment advice?

I have free climbed smaller trees, up to 40 feet for fun and light trimming, but have zero experience with any kind of rigging.
Have some big cottonwood trees close to my house that have no lower branches to start a climb. I want to get to some dead limbs and drop them, but before going into that want to learn how to safely climb with the basic equipment, what do you recommend, climbing harness? Rigging, willing to take the time to learn.
