With a business in my state you 1 Go big contractors license . Pro: bid everything from homes to million dollar clearances
Con: Hands have to be in every aspect of the business or you'll lose $. Your the last to get paid.
2 Stay small get a G.E. license and make it in your name. That way when the client writes the check you can cash it easily.
Pro No 600lb Gorilla breathing down your neck about taxes and workman's comp.
I do best as a freelance cutter . I also live in an area where tree services have full-time climbers that aren't proficient at they're job. A big removal can get cut in an 3-4 h hours not 8-10.
I charge everyone the same . From homeowners to the state and country.

If your going at it without a truck and chipper then maybe just get the licenses to be legit and do it on the weekends until you can afford a truck and chipper and your client base is larger and name is out there. Start doing website marketing early on because it takes time and if your on the first page of google the calls will come in. Your partner sounds valuable if he has experience in residential tree work since he should know how to bid accordingly and how much time a job will take.

I meant instead of going big or small run as the middle man (contract cutter) tell he gets enough $ for equipment.

I truly believe if you can own and run a legit tree service long term you could have succeeded in many other industries. If you can run your own tree service here are the things you must be able to master and do on a weekly basis... salesman, mechanic, landscaper, human resource specialist, accountant, collection agency, engineer, drug and alcohol therapist, divorce counselor, Temp agency, and I'm missing a lot more...

Yep. I just do it though. Maybe a little bit of yelling during the day, and a huge amount of alcohol/cigarette consumption at night.. but yeah, I just do it.
