I have a Stihl MS361 with a RM chain and I am using a northern tools bench grinder to sharpen the chain. Stihl calls for a top plate rake of 30 degrees and a bevel of 85 degrees under the top plate. 85 degrees seems like a pretty steep angle. Do any of you folks use a bevel of 85 degrees? That is only 5 degrees from having a blunt or flat edge.

set that 1 at 60 degrees as well, do not consider their thoughts, it is likely
aimed at their crappy grinders. Good motors, crappy setup though.

Your goal should be around a 60/30 angle, depending how you measure it,
as you look from the side, not to be confused with the view from the top,
and with a grinder, actually, the side of the wheel makes that bevel.
Now with a file, it is a different ballgame, as the file diameter is critical,
and will change with the life of the cutter.

The saw that cures cancer doesn't self sharpen? I figured the famed Stihl MS361 never needed sharpened or self sharpened.

He taking about the resultant angle, not the grinder setup... The Stihl grinder is also 30/60

Sorry Andy, I just prefer my grinder, with all of the adjustmants available,
and with the reversible motor, because I am very picky about my sharpening.

The worst gig I worked at was in Louisville, when I had a choice of using the
Franzen robot, or a wore out Stihl grinder set at a 45 angle and a bungee
cord from the ceiling for a spring, they charged 10-12 for a loop of poorly sharpened chain.

I kept threatening to bring my grinder, but they didn't want the owner to
see me snubbing his $20,000 wunder mach.
Actually I like Mr. Franzen, and with time, and some careful tweaking, the
machine could be quite handy, but the place was a high volumne setup,
no place for quality, just profits.....................

Self-sharpening magic saw

Here's how the self-sharpening feature works:
1) cut a few bricks in half, then cut an Arkansas whetstone :chainsaw:
2) Take ruined chain to dealer for replacement
3) Give money to dealer
4) Put new chain on saw
5) Ta-Dahhh! Saw is sharp again, and you didnt hafta sharpen it!

Stock market: a place where a skilled trader can turn $10,000 into $1,000 in a very short period of time.......

Hmmm.. all adjustments are available on my USG. Did you have that other non-adjustbale version?.. most just use that version for rakers. I know why you do it.. but I don't like the reversing.... lungs and all that stuff - and with the segmented CBN wheels, don't see much difference any more left to right.

Yep, I see terrible chain sharpening from some local shops. years ago.. it was a series of lousy shop sharpens that made me finally lash out for my own grinder.

I handed back 5 new'ish chains to a customer - "they keep jambing in the wood". Told him to take them back and ask for new chains or call Stihl (about the quality of the workmanship).

They has just been sharpened by a local rental "dealer". He used a very narrow wheel on 3/8 chain (huge hook..) and then ground the rakers way way down by putting the name narrow "half moon" cut into the top of the rakers. Worst I've seen for a while..
