Red maple leaves dried up. Is this scorch?

I moved into this new house about 8 months ago and I have 2 red maples in the back. I noticed some of the tree branches seemed to have died this year, but just recently a fair amount of the leaves just died and look like they just dried up. Some are still green and some are brown. I do notice something that sort of looks like bite marks on the bark in some places. It has been really hot lately so I am wondering if it was just scorch.

Could be drought stress. When you say new house, is it new construction? If so, the roots could have been compromised in some manner and is now showing up in the canopy.
